I was wondering if any DO schools allow people to do some of their rotations out of the country, particularly in Latin America. I am interested in doing a rotation in a spanish speaking country. Also, for any COMP students out there, do you know if COMP has some affiliations in other countries and if this is possible to do? Thanks.

Definitely,
OUCOM has a guy whose job is to set those types of rotations up. We have students who have done rotations in equador, cuba, mexico, and el salvador recently. There's more... but you get the point. We are covered by the University's insurance while we're gone and are well looked after. I would guess several of the other schools at Universities have similar setups.

Interesting. I was looking at the AOA website and it had some information on DOCARE or something like that. Supposedly physician, nurses, and students go to different places to volunteer and give their services to different countries.

Has anyone heard of that? It sounds cool but it seems like it would interfere with school. The next one is going to Guatemala.

NSUCOM has DOCARE. I am not in the club so I cant say to much other than I know they (some professors and students) went to Guatemala last year. They did miss a little bit of school but the school worked everything out with them so that it wasnt a big deal - I think they missed five days or something. It does seem really cool and it did interfere with school, but for such a great cause and such a great experience, it is probably well worth it. Also, I know some students went to Jamaica this summer but I am not sure if this was through DOCARE or another club.

That sounds cool. Maybe I'll look into that.

Can't help you on Latin America, but when I interviewed at LECOM a few years ago, they mentioned a rotation in Poland. I don't go to LECOM, so I don't know anything about it...

If you are on HPSP, you can rotate overseas at a military hospital if you can find a physician willing to sponsor you. However, you generally have to pay your own way and do all the legwork yourself.

I see. Well I'm not in HPSP so I can't do that. I'll just see what happens when I get there.
