I was surprised at how much advice I've gotten since getting in to med school, esp well meaning advice that's kinda terrible. It's almost as if people think you got into med school by luck and they know way more than you on what you should do and how to do well, even though most of them that are trying to give me advice don't have any clue on med school/doctor life. You would think that hey - got into med school maybe I do know what I'm doing would factor into the equation at some point...
I'm starting to hate the people who state the painfully obvious. These types of exchanges, all of them have occured IRL since I've gotten my acceptance:
Prima: What are you doing next year?
secunda: Med school in the US.
prima: WOW! You know, med school is really hard!
Prima: I heard you are going to med school!
secunda: yeah!
Prima: You know it's going to be super expensive and all of that will be debt. Are you going to be working during the school year?
Prima: Aren't you worried about getting a residency?
Secunda: Um, not really. I'm not that interested in Derm or anything super competitive.
Prima: Because I heard it's really hard to find a residency spot! My friend just graduated from the Caribbeans and she can't find anything!
Secunda: but... i'm going to a US MD school.
prima: ???? What's the difference?
*face palm*
I totally appreciate all the advice on SDN and from med students, residents, doctors, and hell, even academics, but from people who have no idea about any part of the process, it's just annoying.
