Rudeness

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm kind of feeling these "trunks." Never heard of them before, but might give them a try. I agree that some boxer briefs tend to run too long and feel akward (plus they ride up after they lose their elasticity). I can't wear boxers, especially when I run. Just hate 'em. Hate 'em.

Also had a guy on my wrestling team in high school that used to wear underwear like these...still don't know what to think of that guy...

Yeah, the trunks are great. The ones I get are available at TJMAXX for like $8. They are the Calvin Klein ones that come in the box(NOT the bagged ones, they are different). They retain their elasticity throughout the day. The secret with them is to size down a bit. I am normally a 31-32 waist and buy size S, they fit perfect.

Just make sure they don't look dead after you're done with them.

You know, make sure they aren't like all covered in blue paint looking dead.

I'm afraid you just blue yourself.

But you're going to be all right.

Oh, it's just VenusinFurs again, trying to attract more late-night guy attention on SDN with all her sexual innuendos. They are so incredibly clever!

People like to talk about things that they find interesting, and they don't see it as a forbidden topic because it's so common.

In fact, people don't worry about it too because they think "hey, as a doctor you'll make so much money you won't need to worry about it."

Meanwhile, you read stories on here constantly about dropping out docs...

Well, someone never watched Arrested Development.

EDIT: but thanks for the late night guy attention.

Correct me if I'm wrong ladies, but I honestly think boxers are for little kids. Like, what the hell kind of grown man wears underwear with smiley faces and Spongebob printed on them?

Lol what do you suggest instead - tighty whities? No ty. Get some solid color boxers imo. I'm not quite sure about the rest of this thread, boxer briefs vs trunks or what. Boxer briefs falls in between the tighty whities and boxers opinion for me. But honestly, I suppose I could POSSIBLY be persuaded on a guy wearing ...questionable underwear depending on how he pulled it off. Cute/confident guys can pull off pretty much anything they want to.

Plaid.

Maybe if you're looking for a low sperm count. I'm all about the boxers. Let the boys breath and hang loose. I do wear briefs when I jog though.

I always wondered who bought the banana hammocks...

I never said it made me mad but it does surprise me a bit. I wonder if these people know that they are coming across as a bit negative and disapproving? And Dial71, I do agree that in some cases it is a tad intrusive for people to be asking about a person's finances/debts.

I don't think they are coming across negative and disapproving. I think you're coming across too sensitive.

Well, I see from the replies that there are two schools of thought on the matter:

1. It is reasonable to ask about personal topics in casual conversation, and only prudes are upset about it.

2. Personal topics make for lousy conversation.

Actually, you're missing number 3 which is what the majority of posters on this thread fell into and that's that talking about med school loans doesn't constitute "personal topics" any more than the name of your med school does. I would never ask someone their grade on an exam, I would never ask someone about their sexual habits in the bedroom, I would never ask someone what age they were when they lost their virginity. But it's no secret how much the average med student owes out of med school. I don't understand why this is so offensive.

I guess that I fall in camp two. I think that issues of personal finance could be a conversation topic, but only if the subject of interest initiates the topic. Just like asking for an invitation to a party, asking someone about their finances is rude.

Yeah, and as soon as someone started a conversation with "hey, dude, you know how much I'm going to owe after med school," about a dozen SDNers will race to the board to claim they hate people who just want to brag about going to med school.

Explaining that to strangers is awkward and you always come off as a touch defensive. If you want to have a polite conversation, why would you want to make the other party feel awkward?

Why would that be awkward and why would you come off defensive? Seriously, dude, you need to figure out some better communication skills. If you think it's awkward to explain to someone that the rigorous schedule of med school doesn't allow you to get a job, how are you going to approach a patient during a pap smear or prostate exam? Now THAT'S awkward!

OP, you're correct that discussing money is vulgar, plain and simple. I'm surprised so many posters here don't realize that it shows very poor taste.

We don't "realize" it shows poor taste because it DOESN'T show poor taste. No one asked the guy how much he's worth, for crying out loud. They asked about med school loans, which is a topic on the news and in the papers quite frequently.

For anyone who thinks that's silly, at least be aware of the fact that many people consider it bad manners and will form their opinion of you accordingly.

That's fine, so long as anyone who thinks that asking a question about med school loans is "vulgar," is aware of the fact that many people will consider him/her to be a tightly wound and will form their opinion of you accordingly.

Boxers look absolutely horrible if you're wearing any kind of fitted/tailored trousers. They bunch up and make it look like you're wearing a diaper.

Hm wouldn't know this from personal experience. What do guys do as alternatives? Tighty whities just don't look good on most guys imo.

I have the "bunching" problem with boxers when I wear dress pants as well. So, when I wear dress slacks I wear briefs. They aren't as tight as "tighty whitey's" and they don't make me fell like I'm five.

What's the difference between tighty-whiteys and briefs?

Dude I hate to be a jerk about it, but that's just the way manners work. They don't always make sense, but they are the way they are. It's like if you told me that forks go on the right side of the plate because everyone you know does it - that's fantastic, but it's just incorrect.

I guess I just don't like 'em to hang loose, I like the support. Plus I think boxer briefs look better.

Okay so I talked to a guy friend. He said only the crappy/cheap boxers will bunch up but the nicer ones won't. And he also said tighty whities were for "uptight" and "anal" people. His words not mine 😛. Boxers ftw?

It's not a matter of crappiness. It's the cut of the cloth. Boxers naturally have a ton of extra fabric in comparison to briefs, trunks, and boxer briefs(in that order). If your pants are tailored, they are GOING to bunch with boxers and show through the pants.

Not in this case. The only people who think it's bad manners to ask someone about med school loans are those too tightly wound to make any sense.

Some people are just hating. When I told someone I got into med school (because he ASKED), his response was, "finally." Then I got the "you'll be in debt $500k" blah, blah, blah. It isn't anyone's ****ing business how much debt I'll (we'll) have. They aren't paying it and they shouldn't make stupid ass comments either.

@ Baron: K fair enough 😛. I would be willing to compromise on boxer briefs rather than just plain briefs.

Hm easier said than done but don't let it get to you. Like some of the other posts in here - haters gonna hate. How you manage your finances is up to you. I think when people make comments like this it just means they're jealous and/or trying to find ways to put you down because they're just a negative nancy. Obviously don't go out buying a few houses when that much in debt unless you like being in debt forever, but be smart about budget/etc and you'll be just fine.

I was surprised at how much advice I've gotten since getting in to med school, esp well meaning advice that's kinda terrible. It's almost as if people think you got into med school by luck and they know way more than you on what you should do and how to do well, even though most of them that are trying to give me advice don't have any clue on med school/doctor life. You would think that hey - got into med school maybe I do know what I'm doing would factor into the equation at some point...

I'm starting to hate the people who state the painfully obvious. These types of exchanges, all of them have occured IRL since I've gotten my acceptance:

Prima: What are you doing next year?
secunda: Med school in the US.
prima: WOW! You know, med school is really hard!

Prima: I heard you are going to med school!
secunda: yeah!
Prima: You know it's going to be super expensive and all of that will be debt. Are you going to be working during the school year?

Prima: Aren't you worried about getting a residency?
Secunda: Um, not really. I'm not that interested in Derm or anything super competitive.
Prima: Because I heard it's really hard to find a residency spot! My friend just graduated from the Caribbeans and she can't find anything!
Secunda: but... i'm going to a US MD school.
prima: ???? What's the difference?

*face palm*

I totally appreciate all the advice on SDN and from med students, residents, doctors, and hell, even academics, but from people who have no idea about any part of the process, it's just annoying.

Seriously?

You're hating these people for their supposed ignorant comments?

I don't even know if I should teach you some basic manners on how to treat people with respect and gentleness because you're, supposedly, an adult by now.

ftfy

Also... seems people don't understand that you cannot really work in medical school. Unless you're on ritalin and have 30 hours in your day.

Yes you are taking loans. But you can just choose to politely ignore these insolent people and play in your piles of money when you're done.

Uhh, I watch The Glades, I know it's easy to have a full time job as an RN and a full time job as a "forensic nurse" and still go to medical school.

Get your facts straight

Come on Rollo, you know very well that if you don't know everything there is to know about med school/residency and don't bow at his feet just because he got an acceptance, you're a loser who's nowhere near as smart or well-read as runawayclock.

I mean, sometimes I get annoyed when my parents try to give me advice on what specialty to go into. But it's only because I'm not sure myself and I get a bit stressed out thinking about it. I know they mean well.

I meant that I just hate getting unsolicited advice from people, and especially when it's pointing out something like (a) med school will be hard and (b) it will be expensive. I'm not rude to them IRL, I just nod and shrug it off, but when every other person needs to remind me of fact A and B and sometimes multiple times, it gets obnoxious. It's not as if I wouldn't have considered these things before I applied, no need to remind me that the next whatever number of years will be stressful and difficult.

They're trying to make a conversation with you. I doubt that ALL of them are trying to give you sage wisdom.

And guess what? You will meet plenty of med students and residents who are going to complain about......

......the same things these people are trying to give you "advice" about.
