I started training for a marathon this summer and was doing about 45-60 miles/week. I just started school this Monday and barely got in a measly 5 miles on Wed! We have class from 8-5 almost everyday(usually stay later for labs+clinic) and there a lot of social activities after class that I wouldn't want to miss since I would like to get to know the majority of my classmates+upperclassmen and develop stronger relations with the small close knit group of friends that I've made. I figure once the after class activities begin to die off, I can go for runs in the evening, but don't know what my study schedule will be like yet. I can fit 2-3 miles in the morning during some days since we have designated 'study times' and class starts an hour later. I definitely have more time during the weekend to go for longer runs.

If you're training for a marathon, dual, triath, what does your training schedule look like?

I am not going to make suggestions for you since every person is different in how they need to study and do lab work and the requirements of each school are different. Plus, your goal in running a marathon might very well be different from mine. I can asure you that running marathons can be done while in d-school. Multiple people every year in my school run marathons and I even know of one person who trained for and competed in 2 Ironman Triathlons while in d-school. He fit the training in his schedule and was able to do well enough where he was able to get into an Oral Surgery program.

I can sympathize with you completely - although I'm not training quite as hard. Here in SA a lot of us don't stay on the varsity residences and instead travel in every day. That means early rising to get ready and get to varsity in time to miss the rush hour traffic into Johannesburg. In the evenings its late drives, usually getting home after dark. I've experimented with night runs (not good - I always feel like I might twist an ankle with the next step and security is an issue.) I've also been trying to run during free time at university, although this means I'll need a shower which is a pain, but better than not running at all. I'm going to try hitting some 4:30am runs now that we're heading towards summer. My best suggestion is trying to find gaps in your schedule to run in - perhaps if your school has a track you could stay later and run - a flat track is better than nothing, right? Good luck with working something out mate!

Just remember now that your primary job is a dental student, not a marathon runner. Some folks can do it in d-school, if not they'll be plenty of time to train for a full marathon when your in private practice. If that ends up being the case for you, well then gets some short speed workouts in during d-school and become a kick butt 5k/10k racer and down the road you'll have some strong finishing speed for the full 26.2!

to the OP, man i know what you are saying! it is tough to make time for training! i started the first week of august and very quickly my training was all out of whack. i had lived the "Tri"-lifestyle the past year or so - early to bed, early up to train, once or twice a weekday i would also have an evening session. I got in three half-iron distance events and two olympics this summer. But man, ever since i started school it has been tough, especially bc my class is full of really social people and there are always get togethers, HH's and parties to hit up!

So my plan for the first month was to take a hit with the training and get to know the students in my class and focus on the material. I am through with that and now its time to get back into the training (sept 26 olympic distance). I think what is will end up doing is just shorter course events through school, at leat the first few years, then ramp up the traininng volume once my schedule is a little bit for flexible in yrs 3 and 4.
