I was wondering if there are any dental schools that pride themselves in their graduates working in rural areas. I know that in that some midwestern medical schools have rural seminars and I have been told they may even favor people from rural backgrounds that intend to return to rural area. Are there any dental schools that do similiar things? I am a small town kid who fully intends to return so I was just wondering.

UNC Interviewer mentioned they preferred students you returned back to rural NC.

Creighton. They offer no grad specialties because they want their graduates to be well versed in all kinds of procedures, since the idea is that they might set up practice in a small midwestern town which doesn't have a specialist they can refer out to.

I think I'd look ridiculous if I were driving a fancy car while stuck behind a tractor on a two-lane road.

LOL. that's awesome. ever been to idaho? i've been stuck behind many a tractor. ...although i drive a truck and plan on doing so forever, so i fit in 😀😀

UNC really pushes rural dentistry, because they receive state funding and NC ranks around 49th in overall dentist/citizen ratio. I imagine most state schools would eat up any personal statement of interview that focused on your desire to practice rural dentistry.

Thanks for starting this thread. I was wondering the same thing. I'm from Missouri so I hope that UMKC encourages rural dentistry.

I don't see myself as a big city girl. I grew up in a small farm town and I want to work with people who are kind of like myself.

I don't care about the big money either. I see threads where people talk about the big money they're going to make in (suburban?) health care, but I think I'd look ridiculous if I were driving a fancy car while stuck behind a tractor on a two-lane road.

I don't want to be where the big shopping malls are. I want a chunk of land where I can sip lemonade on my front porch on a sunny summer day and have some peace and quiet.

I agree with you 100%. I hope to actually farm some myself while I have a career in dentistry!

I've never been to Idaho. I just looked at the Idaho tourism site, and they have some gorgeous scenic pictures on there. It makes me want to go fishing. Too bad it's snowy out.

The coolest people I know drive pickups 😀

it's true, the fishing here is awesome! i, unfortunately, live in the uglier part of the state. southeast ID is pretty much a barren desert, full of potatoes and sugarbeets [=more tractors, lol]. it also means more mud, and my Titan loooooves the mud!!

anyhoo, back on topic....lol. i can fully see myself practicing rural dentistry, just so long as i'm within an hr of a decent city. when i was younger i'd do anything to get out of idaho, but now that i've lived in some major cities (Phoenix, Nashville, KC, Charlotte, to name a few), i'd love to live somewhere in the rural West to raise my family.

definitely WVU. They have a mandatory rural rotation built into the program!

UW Ride program for sure. Also Colorado's 4th year has a couple away rotation in rural clinics. ASDOH is very community oriented as well.
