Hey,
Generally speaking, what population/town size is needed to comfortably support a GS practice? Are there govt. programs for surgeons to live in more rural areas like there are for primary care? Thanks

I can vaguely answer part of your question...

I just finished a rural GS rotation in Resume-Speed-Kansas, population 13,000. There is a major medical center 1 hour to the south, and several 2-3 hours away.

The practice consisted of 2 general surgeons and an ENT. They were thriving, having run of 2 ORs and an endoscopy suite. Lots of colonoscopies and EGDs supplemented their practice, so competition from FP might be an issue in that area. Still, they were doing well enough to all own their own planes, among other things.

Don't know about Govt. programs, but good luck looking.
