Hi Everyone, 🙂

I was wondering if people attending Rush like the on-campus housing, or what other housing areas people have decided to live in. I noticed that the ~$850/month rate for a one-bedroom is the same for the Medical Center Apartments on the corner of Ogden and Harrison, but that the rate includes heat and water there. Does anyone have any input on this? Thank you in advance.

This was very helpful, thank you for responding. 🙂

I just signed the lease for an on campus appartment (green carpet, no utilities, tiny, and all). I don't know the area very well so that will just have to do for at least a year.

I have to make a decision b/t on-campus and elsewhere in the next week or so, I'm probably going to go look at the Medical Center apartments and Rush's apartment next week before definitely deciding, and it will probably end up being between those two. Based on paper, the med center apartments might be a little cheaper since it includes heat, but from the outside they look kind of old...

Do you get the impression that Rush is going to be almost like a commuter school atmosphere? I need to just wait until things get rolling and not start jumping to conclusions... Have you gotten any paperwork regarding orientation or the whitecoat ceremony yet?

No info. on orientation, just financial aid. I don't know if we even have a white coat ceremony 😕

I talked to a current Rush student who said that the white coat was the sunday of the week of orientation. I didn't realize the orientation was supposed to be a whole week, actually. But that's what I was told.

I'm going to move into an apt. right by school (non-university housing). I'm not going to start looking until the end of July though for a Sept. 1 move in.

I've only received financial aid info also.

Yes, there is a white coat ceremony. Last year, it was the Friday afternoon of orientation week. I can't really remember when I received orientation info last summer but I think it wasn't until late July. I do know that we have to turn in group orientation ideas by next Wed. so they are at least working on it.

I would advise against moving into the s hit hole MCA building. Bugs, non-modern, strange smells eminating from different apartments...

Find a three flat to move into and live a little.

It's too late now to even ask, but what do you think about Center Court apartments? I signed the lease a few days ago and I just don't know what to make of the place. I like the location but the people at the office were rude, the carpet is green, and the place small. Maybe that's what you get for $850 in the city. Who knows 🙁

I truthfully don't know anything about center court apartments. Is that Rush's university housing? I've never met anyone who has lived there.

You can find a decent 1 br or studio for less than 850 if you move to a more distant area, eg northside, bridgeport...

If anyone is interested in some off campus housing....
I'll be starting in the fall at Rush and found a great apartment in downtown Chicago, easy transportation to all of the med schools in the city. All the trainlines are within 1/2 a block away and you can hop on the harrison bus or Blue line to Rush or UIC or Redline to Northwestern. Below is a link to all the details.

I also have a wonderfull two bedroom apt available aug 1st, 1/2 mile away from Rush and UIC medical campuses.
1000 bucks gets you a recently remodelled place on the 3rd (top) floor w/ hw flooring, lots of windows, back porch, dishwasher, central heat/air, lots of closet space...
It is great, and I'm sorry I have to leave it, but I'm headed to school.

Contact me with more info.

People looking for apartments near Rush might want to try New West Realty. They have many nice apartments in the area and are really good. Also, I've found that although you "can" find apartments really cheap anywhere in the area, there are more nice, cheap apartments west of Ashland and the medical district. I think the aparments get more expensive east of Ashland because of UIC, but you can still find some really good deals. Do all of you guys have roommates?

you can also try C. Gallucci realty on taylor st, east of ashland. I don't think they have a website. There is also Harris Brothers on Loomis?, just n of taylor.

I still find that walking around the neighborhood looking for rent signs works really well.

I would, generally, stay away from any property owned by Tony Rasso, an old Italian guy from the "neighborhood". Most of his properties are unliveable. He is kind of a slum lord.

Hey Skiz Not,
On a completely unrelated matter, did you ever get the UIC campus change you were looking for? Hope you did.

Nope, I was told the Chicago campus was currently over-booked. I went down to Chambana this weekend and leased a house for the year. Thanks for your concern though.

Skiz Knot,
Sorry to hear it didn't work out. If you are like me, you love Chi-town and it is going to be hard to leave. I think this was a particuarly tough year at UIC regarding admissions. I am on the waitlist there too and desparately trying to get in somewhere here in Chicago, otherwise I will have to leave town for school. But since the Chicago campus is overbooked, I guess I can kiss that idea goodbye.

Oh well, back to the waiting I guess.

Cheers,
Flick

Try University Village on south Halsted (south of Roosevelt Road). Beautiful area, but I'm not sure about the costs.

If you happen to get off the waitlist at UIC, you are almost certain not to get the Chicago campus. The sucky thing about waiting is that you can't make definitive plans on where to live.

I can't believe the gaul they had to name it University villiage. How many people from the University can afford a $400K 1200 sq ft condo?

No kidding... nice places but ridiculously expensive to buy. I don't know how much they are to rent, though...?...

I guess if someone is looking to invest some money in property you might look there, because I think the property value is going to skyrocket around here. There are many new developments and the projects get smaller and smaller by the minute. (I don't think that's a good thing, though... I don't think it's fair what they're doing to the people there) University village is going to be amazing when it's finished, though. Especially after UIC is done with it's buildings there. New assembly place and the amazing new athletic complex that is planned for a couple of blocks up. The area is going to be amazing at the price of the cultural heritage that was formerly there.... too bad or very nice--depending which way you look at it...

I was wondering if any of the people who are already in Rush know of a place to post ads for apartments for rent. I know there is a book that you mail to and people look at in the student affairs office, but I was wondering if there was a website or something that people normally use to spread the word about available off campus housing. Thanks!

I have a great apt available on aug 1st, 0.5 miles from Rush U, if you are interested. $1000 for 2 br, recently remodled, hw floors, diswasher, central HAC, etc...
