So, I'm going to have to make a decision by May 15, and these are my current schools (Rush and Michigan State). While nobody is certain, I have some field experience, and I am looking at med-peds and peds-emergency (or any of these 3 as general residencies) as possible residencies in the future.

I like the schools similarly; Michigan may seem a little better (nicer facilities, videocasting of classes, primary care #22) but Rush is in Chicago and has bigger hospitals; it is also about 20k cheaper (perhaps 10k when you factor in cost-of-living).

Will either school give me any particular edge in getting a top residency spot for my interests? Obviously my references and boards will matter more, but will one offer better connections, experiences, training, or a more well-regarded name to residency directors?

From everything I have been told it will make no difference. Videocastiong of classes sounds pretty awesome so I would be inclined to pick Michigan state. However Michigan state is in Michigan. Also are we talking 20K or 20K/year? If it is 20K than maybe consider Michigan state, if it is 20K/year than go with Rush.

LOL! I liked it too, but is there anything in particular you can recommend about it?

That sounds like a pretty terrible reason.

MSU is fragmented over six small-ish cities throughout Michigan. Rush is in Chicago. If it's between Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint, well, that's not a tough choice. Did I mention the former will cost nearly $20k/year less? That's important too.

Coming from someone who goes to a school that video streams all it's lectures, I can say that it is an awesome feature. But, OOS tuition is outrageous at MSU..... So I can understand

Agreed on both accounts.

Sometimes I don't know how I'd manage at a school that didn't video stream lectures.

The community assignments are only for the clinical years, the first two are in East Lansing. It's also possible to stay in East Lansing as a community assignment. I agree that this was something I didn't think I would like about the school.

video capture/ video streaming is 100% key and necessary! I feel sorry for people at schools w/o it 🙁

Yeah, community campuses might not be as great, but I'm interested in Spanish and international med so LMUV in Saginaw is a great fit. Rush has a Spanish club, and some people travel, but it's probably not nearly as good.

Videocasting is sweet but not a dealbreaker. Rush in general has pretty crummy IT.

I don't think either will give you a default edge over the other in residency spots.

IMO, Chicago>>>>>>Lansing, 20k>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lansing.

I also think the idea of MSU's community assignment thing kind of sucks, but I'm sure everyones opinoins differ on that.
