I've been wondering the same thing. Are people not ranking it or is the program not making a long enough list? As far as education, the case diversity and acuity definitely seem to be there. I did get an unexpected vibe from one of the senior residents. He was very unhappy with the didactics and said something like "we work way to hard to not get taught". So Rush might be a "worker" program as much as it is a "student" program. That might have scared people into not ranking it the last few years.

The powers that be make a "short" rank list. For some reason they don't mind having a few spots left over to bring on folks who are leaving other areas of medicine, or whom didn't match into a very competitive specialty (but have filthy board scores).

I think it sends the wrong message to the applicant. Like we have some big awful dark secret. We don't.

I've discussed this at length with the program secretary...we both still can't figure out why exactly they make the short list if the downside is to make applicants unnecessarily worry about the program.

So they don't necessarily want to take people who didn't match into anesthesiology in the first place?
