Russian speakers: any words of wisdom, general advice, anything as far as learning the language?

I've always enjoyed it but know next to nothing about it.

I speak English and some French only.

Hey, bringing this thread back to life.
Actually quite a few of us made it to med school.
If anyone needs any advise on how to get it, let us know.

I have no idea what the proper way to transliterate Russian is.

You could write it in proper Cyrillic, but that leaves those of us who immigrated at the age of 2 and barely having any practice reading Russian going through your post *very* slowly 😉

Took me a second to figure out it was a soccer question.

Note to self: Brush up on Russian soccer.

Oh Snap!
Well, given that I was born in Moscow, I have to support the Dynamo.

privetik comrades!

Anyone find it funny it censored zadu**** but any Russian vulgarity gets through just fine?

As for your actual question, I'm practically a native speaker of English myself, but the only way to really study for the verbal section is to just practice as much as possible. Look at ExamKrackers books, they have a *lot* of passages to practice on.

Hey everyone!

I was born in Estonia but speak Russian (father is Estonian, mother is Russian). I lived in both Estonia and St Petersburg, Russia during my childhood and have been in the US for 12 years.

Regarding the verbal section on the MCAT - it was my least favorite by far and I struggled with it a lot even though there is nothing wrong with my English. I took a Kaplan course before taking the MCAT but I don't think it really helped me with verbal even thought I practiced it a lot. I ended up getting an 11, which is good, but on all my practice tests I was getting 8-9 so the 11 was a surprise.

In American, medical school reject premeds

In Soviet Union, premeds reject medical school

(Not a bad idea considering the quality of the post-USSR education and the fact that most soviet academics have left for the decadent west since the fall of communism)

hah nice just came across this thread... just saying hi 🙂

(and yes I know.. not too creative with my username 😛 )

It looks like you just typed it in English and put it through like, Google translator.

I gave up trying to type on my Russian keyboard, but I studied in St. Petersburg for a month after my junior year of highschool, and took Russian for four years. Too bad my undergrad doesn't have it... I've forgotten so much 🙁

Oh yeah... GO FC ZENIT!!!!

Anyone else see the four goals Andrei Arshavin scored for Arsenal?!?!?

ill most likely start applying next year. originally from lithuania (so technically i was born in the USSR)

I was the first to be born here..the rest of my fam is from kiev. But i am fluent in Russian! privet vsem! 😳

Born in the former USSR (Kiev). It's nice to have other Russian's on SDN here.

Question: Does anyone's undergrad consider them a UMR?

Mine does....weird??

Nope 😛
They consider the former soviet union URM?????

Apparently so. But hey if they insist that I am an URM then I am not going to argue with them....

😛

i m Ukrainian, born and raised in Lviv. i attended high school here therefore i did not think verbal was as excruciating as previously stated, but it was hard 😱😱😱. i have been accepted into med school this year and will be attending one near cleveland, ohio. if anyone has any questions regarding the application process or mcat, etc feel free to send me a message, ill be so happy to help a fellow foreigner..

P.S yeah, none of my interviewers were foreign😕

Lviv representing. It helps to forget your native language when acing the MCAT verbal. Doesn't help with grandparents though!

Anyone get Russian speaking interviewers, maybe to check that you can really speak Russian and aren't just lying about it (like they seem to do with Spanish in the interview thread).

Reggieray2k:

Arsenophilia:

I'm not sure I'd agree with you here. I find that the more foreign languages you know well, the better you speak your own. 🙂))

Hi, I am also from Ukraine. 🙂
I actualy went to med school there and completed two years of it prior moving to US. Does anyone know about someone getting into american med school with 6 in verbal, and 11 in other sections?

Hi,

I am not sure if I qualify as a "true blue(...or maybe red?)" Russian applicant....I have been here for 10 years and most people wouldn't ever guess that I am Russian unless I mentioned my name. But I am applying and am of the Russian persuasion lol.
I never had anyone take me being Russian as a bad thing-mostly people are just impressed that I speak so well after only 10 years...Having an English teacher mother helps.
So yea...currently playing the waiting/make up conspiracy theories game as I wait for invitations to interview and decisions.....awesome.

Tot, who is indeed Russian
