G'day all. So my long-term goal is to do full-time mission work overseas. Obviously then, I want to keep up my G-surg skills even if I do a fellowship. Anyway, my question for you is this: how much do your skills atrophy by taking a year off? Especially if your fellowship is in a different area like Hand surgery?

So, I'm interested in what you think; especially those who have completed their residency. Not to say that a MS III, premed, or high school sophmore couldn't say something earth shattering, but com'on, really.

And as we've previously covered, I am the Great Saphenous!

You'll be a little rusty but once you start operating you'll recover rapidly. Remember, a lot of people take off a year for research and do very minimal operating. If you've trained for 5+ years doing any type of operating, you won't forget it that quickly. Again, you'll definitely be a little rusty, but not like "chainsaw massacre" rusty.

After i finished my gen surg residency i did a fellowship - the first year of my fellowship was research so i didn't really do much operating. I must say i was back into the swing of the OR in just a day or two. The early mornings took a bit longer to get used to.

don't worry about forgetting skills - it really is like riding a bike.
