I'm hoping orthodontic residents and others can comment on this topic. I've heard a little about franchises that employ orthodontists. Monarch is a name I've heard of, for example. What are the other big players? Are these franchises employing only orthodontists or GPs, too?

What do the rest of you think of this--an increasing trend to work for a corporation as a specialist? Is there a similar corporation hiring surgeons, periodontists, or endodontists? I think I recently heard of a pedo equivalent.

Monarch and others have been around for a while employing mostly GP's but also some specialists. I don't see any increasing trend to work for a corporation as an orthodontist. The vast majority of orthodontists work in private practice and always will. But if you're looking for a temporary job while searching for a private practice opportunity, it's not a bad option. Same applies to a GP. Most doctors aren't looking to spend their careers in these mills.
