Sabiston Vs Greenfield's

Unfortunately the program i am going to does not provide any textbooks or educational material though its a university hospital and supposed to be a good program so i have to get it on my own

i was thinking
1- operative anatomy conners =150$
2- Either greenfield or sabiston = 150$ ( greenfield's new edition is to be released September 2010)
3- any suggestions for ABSITE question books / banks other than rush ?
Budget will be 500 i guess

Does your program have a didactic series that utilizes chapters from one or the other books? I have heard of this being the case.

I already picked up a used copy of Rush and a used copy of "the surgical review", and my program gives me a book moneys so I will buy whichever one the program prefers and a good atlas...

Then again, I have digital access to both Greenfield ("Greenfield's Surgery: Scientific Principles and Practice, 4th ed., 2006") and Sabiston ("Sabiston Textbook of Surgery, 18th ed., 2008") through my library... but that isn't quite the same as the visceral feel of the book... I wonder if I can get them for an Ebook reader or, if Verizon ever gets the Iphone, for the Iphone.

The visceral feel of the book...u hit it on the head, exactly. i am ok with ereading a paper, a chapter, an op technique..but when it comes to hardcore study i have to feel the papers and bond with the book

I am biased, but I really prefer Sabiston to all other surgery texts...at least for the junior resident years. I have read good portions of Schwartz, and I've spent time reading ACS Surgery and Greenfield, and I still like Sabiston the best.

On a separate note, I own and freqeuntly read Cameron's, but I waited to buy it until my 3rd year. Also an exceptional book.

I think Operative Anatomy is a sound purchase as well.

For basic science and good junior-resident-level reading, I'd recommend Sabiston's. But the best thing for you to do is skim through a chapter or two from each textbook and see for yourself which is better.

Thanks BUZZ ME, i did skim through both i am leaning more to greenfield but i think it is more time consuming per page which is a consideration given the life waiting for me

Greenfield is heavier on basic science and the pathophysiology of disease. Overall it's the superior text.

Gotta be Sabiston.

Then again I am a gas-er (who likes to know what you guys are surgerizing back there)
