I just got off the phone with my pre-med advisor, and she told me that scores from the April test dont really change if you take it again in August.
Is this true?

Also she told me (I am a non-science major) that since I scored below a 25, I dont need to retake it in august, and instead I should take more science courses, retake the mcat in 2007, and apply for the 2008 school year. my cum is a 3.4 and science a 3.0.

I am not looking at an ivey med schools. Schools like Meharry, etc. are fine for me. Medical school is medical school, as long as it is not outside the US.

do you guys think I should go with what she is suggesting,or go ahead and apply this application round and take my chances? I would hate to have to take another year off,(I graduated in Spring 2005) but if it makes me more competitive..... 🙁

btw, i have great lor, research, emt, leadership, etc.

Retake in August! Everyone has great LORs and research... The MCAT score is what sets you apart from the rest... Below 25 will hardly get you anywhere.

You definitely will have to retake to have a realistic chance. How were your practice scores? What can you change about your studying methods? If you know where you went wrong, you can try for August.

I don't know why she told you this but it's not true at all. Maybe she means the average score.........you CAN improve your score

Yeah, you seem to be pretty anxious, with all the new threads you've created recently.

Umm... 25... there are people who are going to say, "Keep the score! You will get in! I know people who got a 25 and are going to Harvard! etc etc..."

While that is possible, for most people, that is not a promising situation. Other applicants have 30+ scores with similar research, LORs, and better GPA. Frankly, you probably need a higher MCAT score to balance your weaker GPA.

I'm pretty sure your advisor meant that you should take the MCAT next year, right?

I am applying to DO and MD, however, if you look at the DO requirements, some of them are more intense than MD. For example, they require more upper level science courses than some medical schools do.

btw, I was not just looking at DO because of the 'low scores' myth that surrounds them. I like the philos. behind it. Some Do schools have higher requirements than some MD schools.

However, my advisor told me that since I dont have any upper level courses, and my gpas and mcat score, than they wont accept me either--at least this time around. 😡 🙁

Will you consider DO?

I would listen to your advisor. If you're sub 25 then its not a fluke and more like your sciences aren't up to par, especially w/a 3.0 bcpm gpa. Taking it in august only gives you 2 months and thats not a lot of time to give you an outstanding mcat to counter your gpa

I'm applying to both, and can tell you I would take KCUMB over a couple of MD schools given the choice...based on many factors...so I wasn't just asking because of the score...

Depending on how much time you have to study, there is the potential you could improve quite a bit I would think...I'm hoping to improve quite a bit over this summer...
