So, my friend is choosing among the following schools: Albany Medical College, Howard University (she's East Indian), and New York Medical College. Where do you think is the best place to apply as a safety. Here's her stats:

school: UC Berkeley
cumGPA: 3.58
sciGPA: 3.4
mcat: 36 Q

money is definitely a big problem. at this point, she has depleted her account and is working more than ever just to pay secondary fees. she can only add one more to her list. I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid problem... but, that's just the way it is.

also, she doesn't want to apply to a do program... she needs a DO letter and she doesn't have one.

I would tell her to go to the Pre-Health department at Berkeley and look through the MSAR, see what schools are a bit below her stats and take a nice amount of OOS and then apply there.

She might also want to consider loans for med school applications --- I know some don't like it, but if I could only afford to apply to 10 schools with my own money, or 30 schools with a loan, I'd take the loan.

All three would make pretty good safeties, but all three are very different schools from each other. Tell her to choose the school that best suits her. None of them is too big a reach stats-wise.

I vote for NYMC. They seem to like Berkeley grads. Albany would probably be fine too, but not Howard unless she has done work in underserved urban communities.

Honestly, if you look at the number of applications Albany and NYMC get compared to the number of interviews offered it becomes clear that neither is truly a "safety." Sure, a large portion of the interviewees are accepted, but not many of the applicants actually make it to interview.

It's good that you listed more than one. You can never have too many safeties.

I think she listed 36Q as her MCAT, no?

I know SDN has this culture of not referring to "safeties" because all US allopathic schools are competitive, etc. etc. etc. But as long as folks understand and respect that, I have no objection to the term.

Without it, you have to do a lot of diplomospeak. Instead of, "Is NYMC a good safety for me?", you have to say, "Is NYMC a good choice for a school that I would have more favorable chances of being accepted to as compared to the other schools I'm applying to?"

First of all, I am not pre-med and am merely asking for my friend. Second, if you had attention to detail (which by the way is necessary in the field of medicine), you would notice that I did write down her stats. You should be nicer. I was just asking a simple question and I didn't appreciate being treated as though I am an idiot. I know that med school is hard to get into, but, would you respond to my thread if i wrote "my friend wants to know what's easier to get into among these three schools" as the subject line?

I don't mean to be mean or anything but you really should watch what you say and think about it first especially if you want to be a doctor. The field is based on being humanistic... last time I checked, rudeness is not part of being a humanistic person.

I'm not sure whether this is a factor of con. or not, but NYMC is one of the most expensive meds in the country, debt-wise. It might be wise to look into safeties that *won't* leave you high-and-dry when it comes to finaid in the fall, or else there won't be much good getting into them.

That's true too. At this point, she just wants to get in somewhere... she's just adding this one extra school because she feels like she applied to too many reaches.

I actually wasn't addressing you. I was addressing someone else in the thread who was calling these schools safety schools and doesn't even have his/her MCAT back yet.

There is no such thing as a "safety school" amongst the allopathic schools in this country. For an explanation, see my original post (I suggest you use your "attention to detail"). And now, I think I've had enough of this snark-fest for the night.

It's a pretty good argument. Oh, and that's the only school out of the 3 that I interviewed at, and they seemed relatively nice, and have a wonderful cadaver lab. I didn't like though, the dorm feel of the student apts across the street.

Hey NYMC was my "safety" and I'm pretty happy here now. I didn't like the dorm feel either, so I live off campus with some other students I found who felt the same way. its cool tho good profs nice facility cool students lots of hospital settings to rotate thru like private St. Vincents and public metro in manhattan and private tertiary care level 1 TC Westchester Med adjacent to med school. Its kinda in the middle of nowhere ie not in a town, but thats cause its a big county complex. other than that its really cool here...nyc is 25 minute drive away from campus for when we have time to get away, which isnt often cause med school is hard anywhere...
