I've got a 3.4 SGPA, 3.9 non-sGPA, 3.5 overall. With 30 on the mcat. Plus peace corps in Africa. But so far only have these as safeties: Tufts, Umass, Tulane, Rush and Jefferson. Can anyone recommend others?

yeah, go look up mcat and gpa avgs online or at your health office's MSAR.

there are literally dozens of other allopathic schools in the tiers of the five schools you mentioned, so its kind of pointless to add to the list.

To the OP I believe you have a reasonable chance of getting accepted to those schools you listed but I wouldn't necessarily call them safety schools for you. Check mdapplicants to see what I mean. Safety schools would be more like Drexel, Albany and Temple. You would almost certainly get interviews at those places.

Are you an IL resident? If not, scratch Rush off of your safety list. They are dedicated to taking 80% of their class in-state.

Exactly, I wouldn't consider Tufts a safety school at all.

your MCAT is below avg for Tulane...so I wouldn't consider it a safety.

I would be weary of thinking about schools as 'safeties'.....instead, you could divide your schools into tiers (ie 1st=top ranked, 2nd, 3rd and so). With your stats, I believe that you can get an acceptance, but it might not necessarily come from one of your designated 'safeties'. Thinking of a school as a safety makes you think that you should get in w/ no problems, and as you may see, the application is not really that simple as that.....the best is not to get your hopes up :horns:

With your numbers, those sound more like target schools to me.

Don't use the same thought process for med school that you used for college. There really is no such thing as a safety medical school.

I 2nd that, no such thing as a safety med school.

Rule 1: There are no safety schools.

Rule 2: If at any point and time you wish to be safe and apply to US allopathic schools that you think are safety schools, please refer to rule 1.

None of the schools you listed are really safety schools. UMass is very difficult to get into, especially considering all the great candidates that come out of Mass(I am from Mass and worked at UMass for several years). As for Jefferson and Tufts, look at their GPA/MCAT, you are average for what they take. So considering you are average you are going to really have to stand out to get into these schools. With your numbers I would recommend applying to between 15-20 schools.

UMass is harder to get into than BU and Tufts. I agree with broadening your applications to include to include Temple, Drexel, NYMC, Albany and GW.

Get the list of out of state matriculant percentages and apply accordingly.

Think NY med in Vlhalla, Chicago med in IL and your state school whatever that may be.

Hmmm... how is it that you have a 3.4 SGPA, 3.9 non-SGPA, and your overall GPA is 3.5? Shouldn't it be 3.65? With a 3.65/30 + Peace Corps experience in Africa, I'd say you have a solid shot at the safety schools you named. Assuming that you have an interest in international health stuff, I'd add to your list Tulane and Boston U. Also, be sure to throw in some more higher-ranked schools to see how things pan out.. Good luck

Your science GPA is below the average for Rush. Their 2003 class had average sGPA of 3.6 and average MCAT of ~30P. Also, if you're not an IL resident it will be extra difficult for you to get an interview. Just in case you missed every other post there's no such thing as a safety med. school🙄

That's not necessarily true, since the logic only applies if he/she took an equal number of credit hours in science and non-science. If the major is biology, for example, then it would be reasonable to estimate that 80% of his/her credit hours is science courses,

then the overal GPA could be ESTIMATED using a weighted average
3.4 x 0.8 + 3.9 x 0.2 = 3.5

Sorry, being an applied mathematics major, i just couldn't help myself. 😛

ahhh. duh. of course. I'm a complete idiot.

I'm tempted to delete my post now, except you quoted me +pissed+

and I'm going to med school next year?!

FU#KI#G ****!!!! THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS SAFETY SCHOOLS. Please get over this stupid concept. This is not undergraduate applications where you are guaranteed to get in. Over fifty percent of med school applicants will not get in this year. Sorry to sounds harsh, but wake up!!!

there is no such thing as a safety school.

I know students with high MCATs and high GPAs being rejected from these "safety schools" because they didnt show geniune interest in the school.

actually i wouldnt even consider chicago med a safety school. typically these schools with lower mcat and gpa averages get tons more applications so it still can be difficult to get into them IMO...as everyone else has echoed....nothing is guaranteed in this process. take it from someone who has applied to 60+ schools and been through the process twice.

exactly what i was going to say. the schools with lower mcats and gpas tend to either a) take only in-state applicants or b) have so many people applying that they become more competitive than the schools with higher stats. there are no safety schools, but there are schools that are more in your range. check the admissions stats for several schools and see how you match up. look at age of matriculating students, in-state/out-of state acceptances, avg gpas/mcats, and anything else you can find to see how you match up to what they're looking for in a student. just remember, as smart as you may be, there are no safety schools.

good luck!

people need to realize that there aren't any guarantees. it really sucks if you expect to get into school but don't. i'm just pointing out the need for people to be realistic...
