Salaries

I know this has been asked before, but what are starting salaries for D.O?
😕

Being that we are DOs we are lucky if we get $5.15/hr.

To my knowledge all DOs work pro bono only...just like all lawyers.

Oh, I thought a few healthy chickens for most appointments, or a healthy horse for the more difficult cases 🙂

why can't I get a serious answer from people? 😕 When I ask a question on the allopathic forum, I get straight, mature answer. I was considering looking into D.O, however if this is an accurate cross-section of my associates, I would rather be a trashman. 👎

You'd probably make more money as a trashman... after malpractice that is.

Your getting flak from people because (and please correct me if I'm wrong) there is no discrepency between a DO's and an MD's salaries. Suggesting that there is demeans us all as future physicians by suggesting we will be lesser doctors and therefore should be paid less.

Man!!! You shouldn't have answered his question. Now he might consider becoming a D.O.

FutureOrthoDoc said:

If you don't realize that MD's and DO's get paid the same, because they apply for and obtain the same jobs, then you are too incompetent to get a straight answer, which is why you haven't.

An osteopath can use 1 or more of the follwing to treat a pathologic abnormality.

1. Medicine
2. Surgery/Procedures
3. OMM - a learned skill that takes much practice to become proficient. Granted some are naturally better than others. Some students hate it so much (probably >50% of my class) that it is obvious that they'll never use it.
4. Education/Counseling - may work for things like pre-hypertension or psych. Probably the most underutilized aspect of medicine b/c A) it doesn't reimburse/pay well, B) the fear of actually talking to your patient and C) it is a skill that even psychiatrists are not necessarily good at.

If you are employed by a group or HMO you make what you negotiate which will correlate with the going rate for that specialty in that area. Hence you will have a range of salaries within a given specialty. If you are self-employed i.e. own your own practice your salary is dependent on your business acumen, how much you decide to pay yourself, profiency at billing/coding, work hours, specialty, reimbursement rate for your geographical area, your fee schedule, payor mix (all cash, all HMO/PPO, or somewhere in b/t) and finally how you manipulate the above 4 ways to correct a pathological abnormality.

By the way don't double post.

not to be mean, but maybe if you didn't ask such a dumb question you would get a straight answer.

lets see....what do D.O.'s make? what do M.D.'s make? oh wait...they are the SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

depending on area, speciality, etc. look it up online.

Future Orthopaedic Doctor......

Basic research is one of the pillars of medical science. If you want to even be a lowly military osteopathic family practice doctor, you still have to be able to use tools such as www.google.com or www.yahoo.com or www.spankportierforprofit.com

Ideally, questions that you can answer yourself...you do! When something comes up that is worth everyone's time (as they explained to me in boot camp 12 years ago) then you ask. Otherwise you waste 1 minute x every person who reads the post/has to listen to the statement.

In a company of 175 guys, obvious questions cost nearly 3 hours......

I look forward to your new screen name, and new attitude.

Portier -

you sound more like John Stewart rather than the Hal jordan in your avatar!

I'll take that as a compliment...I think.

John Stewart had a role in Half Baked. He was the enhancement smoker: "Have you ever seen the back of a dollar bill? Have you ever seen it on weed?"

I read GL comics in H.S. That's how I ended up so cool. JK

They really ended up making Hal a loser in the end, huh?

haha..that was funny. What's even funnier is that most pre-meds think that they'll be a "shoe-in" for DO schools....only to find out they were straight out rejected couple months later down the road. :meanie:

Not sure where that was directed? But you are right; Osteopathic Schools are looking for different students than Allopathic Schools...

a physican's salary (DO or MD) is the same salary. for clarification 🙂

i didn't mean to make it sound like a DO is the same as an MD.

First of all, I still never said I wanted to be a D.O. The whole point of this thread was just to find out if there was any difference in salaries. If there is none, fine. I really expected to get helpful answers, but all I got was rudeness and cynicism. I also stated that this usually doesn't happen on the allopathic forum, and I stand by that. Thank you to all that were helpful in your responses. To the rest of you, Im sorry your GPA was not good enough to get into a regular med school.

lol i guess in the allopathic thread, ppl are not attacked by others saying their school is not a regular med school.

id wager if you were to do such a thing, you would get a similar response from them as you have from the DO side. we are all humans, we are all learning lots and lots of stuff that can become stressful. we should all try to approximate an atmosphere of construction and unity rather than one that identifies differences and separates us.

good luck on either path you pursue.

Now that was just plain ugly...it wasn't even funny....

I have the broadest sense of humore of anyone I know (I think)....and I didn't even snicker.

How about you let me expalin to you the additive effect of OMM charges on office visits.

You see, you can CHARGE for OMM. You charge based on body area treated. Do the inlet, thoracics, hips, and maybe an extremity move and you get to charge for 4 areas....

I can do this in 5 minutes...add that to MD charges, and you have MORE money.

And here we got this fine stereo...sto, I mean acquired at rock bottom prices...sold to you fo' 5 dolla!

Mo' money Mo' money Mo' money!

(does anyone get the reference?)

the who? is that a movie? man... i think i was teaching myself calculus or something back then... what is tv??

It was an all black comedy show...

Jim Carey got his start there. I have the Vanilla Ice video he made at home...I'll have to upload it and post it here.

There was also a white "fly girl."

We had lots of "fly girl" dance recitals in HS. With a token cracka' chick.

They were called, "Round the way girls."

It was a good show.. I was in grade 8 or 9 when that was around.

Does anyone remember long time on ago on SNL, there was a professor (or something like that)... he would always ask this question "If you where a hot dog would you eat yourself?? and he would have shaking like parkinson's. Anyone remember that? What was the name of the professor and is it possible to download the clip.

I use that line all the time when someone asks me a stupid question.. but no one knows it so its lame.

I remember. That was Harry Carey!!! The famous "take me out to the ball game" announcer on WGN for Cubs games. I think Will Ferrell did those skits. They were awesome!! Sadly I know it pretty well. It was on Weekend update with Norm Macdonald. "Hey Norm, if you were a hot dog and stranded on a deserted island, would you eat yourself? I know I would! I would cover myself in mustard and relish." Then he goes on to say they should start cloning hot dogs instead of sheep to rid the world of hunger.

My other favorites include the Sean Connery Jeopardy shows, "down by the river" motivational speaker, and of course Tunsis(sp?) the driving cat. Back in the day(college) my roomate downloaded a bunch of those SNL skits. But I would never do that since it's illegal. 😉

Colin? He's a good actor but that is a stretch for his accent and his age. You mean Will Farrell as I posted above. And it is friggin' hilarious!!

Check out the pics and characters on this Will Ferrell website

Click on media and then Will's characters

HARRY CARAY

Harry Caray was the long time broadcaster for the Chicago Cubs and his voice has been perfect fodder for comedians for years. Many have attempted it, but nobody could find much to do with it.

Will Ferrell now "owns" the impression. That means that most anyone who tries the impression is really doing an impression of Will doing an impression of Harry Caray. It's that good. It's that funny.
The same thing has been said of Dana Carvey's "George Bush" impression, Phil Hartman as "President Clinton", and Jay Mohr's "Christopher Walken."

With the passing of the real Harry, fans have been wondering and hoping for Will's impression. Will has stated publicly that he would like to do it again.

Best Will F- Harey Carey line?

"What's your favorite planet?....Mine's the SUN!"

And BTW- I'd like to give a big 👍 to my fellow future DOs esp. Poitier for hijacking this flamebaiter. Perhaps the rest of us can take a lesson and do this more often w/trolls a la our beloved OP.

Now let's let this thing sift out with the rest of the trash.
