I am an HPSP student. i will be pursuing a psych residency. In terms of my 4 year active duty service commitment, how do I figure out the annual salaries in the military for a psychiatrist fresh out of residency?

The military pay system can be a bit confusing. Lets say you are stationed in Norfolk, VA right after residency and you went straight through without doing a GMO tour. Your pay for 2008 should look something like this:

Monthly pay:
Base pay (0-3 with >4 years) - $4,523.70
BAS - $202.76 non taxable
BAH (with dependants) - $1,753.00 non taxable
VSP (non intern <6) - $416.67
BCP (<10) - $208.33

Annual Bonuses:
ASP - $15,000
Psych ISP - $15,000

Annual grand total - $115,253.52

According to Allied Physicians salaries the equivalent staff physician with < 2 years experience would make ~ $149,000.

Of course this is only a rough guess with civilian pay. Obviously pay is variable there and many other things can get thrown in the mix like student loans, buying into a practice, etc..
