How much would a psychiatrist charge for off-site supervision for 2 NPs. I am thinking of 50 to 60k for each one. I will probably meet the NPs once a month.

Before anyone has any objections, I am serving as a medical director of another clinic and am supervising NPs. This additional supervision will be short term until my day job fills up.

I love teaching and discussing cases with others. Why would there be any objections?

many physicians consider those who supervise NPs as traitors contributing to the decline of the field and training our replacements for their 30 pieces of silver etc. I assume this is what he is referring to. While there is certainly a dire need for more mental health providers such that we should not have any competition from NPs, some psychiatrists are reporting being replaced with the NPs they once trained or supervised.

...especially when NPs call themselves "doctor" and patients are kept in the dark. It happened at one site where I worked.

So teach and train medical students and residents

Exactly, or if your institution doesn't have medical students, taken in an IMG-student under your wing for 4-6 weeks.

"Supervision". Right. How many charts are you gonna review? 10%? So they can f' up the other 90%?

How many resident notes would you read? Oh right, 100%, right before you cosign them. And discuss them daily with the residents in rounds.

Sweet. Hope the pittance they're throwing your way while the hospital system laughs its way to the bank is worth it.

$5k/month per NP. Adequate supervision entails weekly education, chart review, and 24/7 availability for questions/concerns.

Yeah is this actually gonna happen in this case OP? Sounds like you're meeting them "once a month" so doubt the weekly education is gonna be happening.

15K? Who cares, that's only 3 months of supervision money. Still got to keep the other 45K that year lol.

Yeah, I was gonna say that it sounds like a slap on the wrist.

Lol no one gets $5k a month for supervising an NP. I believe Texas Physician was saying it wouldn’t be worth it from a time and liability perspective if you weren’t getting at least $5k a month per NP which is substantially more than one would actually get in practice.

Yes, you can get that per month or more.

You can also lose your license for poor supervision. Friend of mine had it happen to him.

Unless you get $5k+, it isn’t worth the added time to provide necessary supervision via weekly education, chart reviews, and constantly be available to answer questions.

Interesting, I think that would very atypical out here. If I asked for that for supervising our NPs, because they get paid so much, it would just be cheaper to hire a psychiatrist. Either way, I politely declined to supervise our NPs. If they have any issues with patients, then I see the pt myself and bill for the encounter as a shared visit.

Which is the way it should be. If they want to refer to you as a specialist, let them refer patients to you as a specialist.
