I've heard of both so juss wondering what ppl think. Do ppl have better shots at getting into the dental school if they're an undergrad from the same school or does it actually hurt your chances cause they want you to go explore and experience other schools?

It will definitely help your chances for the most part.

From what i know is it hurts my chance at my school. The SOD 2010 at UCLA there are only 2 undergrad at UCLA. How do i know? The admission committee usually gave presentation at our predent club.

We have something like 8 kids from University of Louisville undergrad. I guess it really depends on the school.

Recently I've heard something otherwise. Students at UCLA SOD told me that the school accepts many UCLA, UCI and UCSD students while UCSF likes UCB and UCD students. But, other than those students, everyone else says it's super hard to get an acceptance from UCLA SOD if you went to UCLA undergrad. I don't know. Hopefully I will prove them wrong.

OK. I just did a predents.com search, and out of 16 students (who interviewed at UCLA, are Cal residents and are class of 2010 to be) 4 went to UCLA for undergrad. It's 5 out of 25 in class of 2011.

Thus, knowing that it's about 20~25%, UCLA undergrads are not specifically overrepresented in predents.com profiles, and the school usually interviews about 120 in-state students, we can assume that about 24~30 people from UCLA undergrad are invited for an interview at UCLA School of dentistry every year.
Of course I know that my conclusion can be wrong if many people lied on predents.com.

Btw, unlike I previously stated, I also found that there are many UCD and UCB students getting interviewed at UCLA.

I'm sure you wrote a diversity statement. Maybe that's their goal. Bring some new faces in.

If it's true that UCLA interviews about 25 UCLA undergrads every year, I think the school strongly favors its undergrad students. Which makes me happy. 🙂

Can you say FOOTBALL!?

That's why USC and Michigan look so appealing and not Ohio.

Huh? What does that have to do with my statements? 😕

Are you making fun of our football team?

Well, I did my undergrad at Penn and I didn't hear from them until after I got all of my other acceptances on Dec 1. I know at least two other Penn pre-dents who interviewed there before me and I saw at least 3 people from my Columbia interview on their Penn interview the week after I met them. I don't think I was given any special advantage. Some schools want to diversify their student body by having a range of undergrads represented.

yah i go to UCLA undergrad also and I heard UCLA don't accept that much of UCLA undergrad!! which sucks!!!

I'm not sure... but I have heard that it hurts you as well... from SUNY Buffalo, but I pulled my app before I could see if an acceptance awaited me. I have heard SUNY Buffalo medical school though doesn't accept as many of their own undergrads from friends of mine who spoke to their advisors from different schools (Canisius in this case).

I have no idea one way or the other but I bet it can help or hurt you based on the quality of your application. If you have a solid GPA from quality classes where maybe some of the adcom people know the professor and know how tough it is to do well in that class, I would imagine that would help you. On the flip side, if you have an average GPA but it is from classes where the adcoms know it's easy to make an A in or something like, I'm sure your GPA would be less regarded compared to another applicant with the same numerical GPA. Same thing with LOR's. If they're good quality letters from important profs that the Adcoms might know about, then that would definitely help you I imagine. But, if your LOR looks like a cookie-cutter letter where the prof copied and pasted your name and hit print, and the adcom's realize that...then I'm sure that would hurt you.

Just my 2 cents.
