Hey guys,

http://www.yelp.com/biz/prometric-test-center-san-diego

I was looking at some reviews for the San Diego Prometric Testing Center near the Miramar air station (link is above). Some of the raters complained about the airplane noise.

Have any of you taken a test there, and if so how was your experience?

Thanks a lot!

BTW, do they allow you bring your own earmuffs?

I took it there on 7/30. Honestly, I didn't ear any airplanes. The AC was on full blast, so maybe thats why. It's a really nice testing center actually, a lot better than I imagined. There's this little courtyard with a fountain right outside the room. I went there on breaks to walk around and clear my head. The bathrooms are really close to the testing room, so you don't need to worry about wasting time searching for them. When you go into the suite room, they check your ID and then give you a key for a blue locker for you to put your stuff in. At that point, you have to put EVERYTHING away except your ID. If you don't, they'll totally call you out and yell at you (happened to a guy that decided to keep flashcards with him rofl). They also give you this laminated paper thing that lists rules and policy stuff. Basically you sit in the little waiting room and read that until they call your name. Then you walk over to the left and there are a bunch of stations set up, and they'll tell you which one to go to when they call your name. At the little station they just check your ID again, get a fingerprint, take a picture, make you sign in, and make you empty your pockets. The person that did all of that escorts you into the room, to your numbered station. They give two sets of ear muffs. Ones black and ones yellow. I used the yellow ones but they kind of hurt so I took them off after 10 minutes...not sure what the black ones are for, or if they're even for sound reduction. Honestly didn't need the headphones until I got to BS because by then, some people were just typing like mad on the WS and it was getting annoying. There were 19 people in my testing room.

Idk about bringing your own earmuffs, but some people did bring their own set of earpugs. The woman said they must be OUT of their original packaging..which I thought was kind of weird, since everyone says they have to be in the packaging still, unopened 😕. If you're bringing earmuffs/plugs, just ask the first staff person that checks your ID if its okay and stuff. If its not, then you can probably just run to your car (parking lot is really close to the room) or stash it in the locker. Staff overall was very friendly and approachable.

About the airplane noises though, I should mention that when they call your name, they'll send you to one of 4 (?) desk stations for the fingerprint, picture, etc. Each station is in front of a testing room, and all the people testing in that testing room must check in/out with the same station. So basically there were 4 testing rooms, with ~19 people in each one. I was in room 2 and didn't hear any airplane noise. But idk if the same can be said for the other rooms...it might just depend which room you get put in.

Hope this helps and good luck 🙂

^^ Thanks for the valuable input. Much appreciated. Those yelp review scares me because I think if airplanes were whooshing over the prometric center it would really affect me personally, which is why I'm considering changing my testing center.

Any one else have any different experiences there?

I took MCAT there Jan 2010. I thought it about the same as the Prometric in SF I had been before.

the airplane is probably one of those military jets streaking across the sky from the Miramar military base. usu that happens in the afternoon. It's really short though, not persistent noise.

Yeah, I think the AC noise is more annoying, too loud for me. But if you get admitted late into the room, the writing section keyboard clatter is the most annoying when your'e trying to work thru the verbal.
They should all get quiet keyboards!

I think if possible bring your own earplugs. The headphones at the center I can use to cover my ears were too small (can I adjust it?).

The guy's restroom is 2nd F, a bit far. I would find it and know where it is before the test, so you can be efficient during breaks.

Just remember when you get nervous take deep breaths, exhale slowly, while letting eyes gaze unfocused off the screen

Good luck.

Would you say this is regarded as a good testing center in the area? Did you pick it because of proximity to where you live? I'm not really sure how to go about picking a testing center.

It's decent enough. Chose it b/c of proximity. Prometric Center is a professional test-giving company. People take other tests there too.

It's the same as the SF Prometric I've taken the test at.

Did anyone take the test at San Diego State University?

Not me. But my Princeton Review instructor took it there and got a high score. Can't be bad I suppose.
