Hey SDN,

I recently decided to empty my bank account and apply to 51 schools through AMCAS. I submitted my application for review yesterday, July 30th, for AMCAS review. I have a few questions:

1. On one of my future courses entered, I did not enter "special type: future". Would they return my application because of this? Everything else was entered properly.

2. As soon as I clicked submit, I got emails from four medical schools asking for secondary applications. Is there a benefit to rushing to fill them out?

3. Boston University had "optional essays" on their secondary application. They even had "(really, these are optional)". Are they? Sound silly to ask; just looking for opinions.

Cheers.

1. No
2. Depends
3. Yes

But how does one save time and money by emptying his bank account?

I think he means he now can avoid wasted time spending his money on things like food and alcohol

You're going to have one hell of a time with secondaries from that many schools.

51 schools??? Dang! Talk about applying broadly lol. I'm sure you'll get in somewhere though : )

I just do not want to sit back in December and think, "I should have applied there..."

Pain in the ass to get so many secondaries done.

Not verified yet so holding off a little...

I feel you. What are your stats and ec's like? If you don't mind me asking

I did not do BU's "optional" essays and got a swift rejection in the middle of the night that I submitted their application.

I would start pre-writing now man... you're underestimating how much time and work secondaries take, especially if you have anything else going on in your life (work or school). Even some secondaries with zero essays have taken me 1-2 hours just to fill all that junk out

It would suck if you didn't get accepted into at least 1 school. All of that money and time wasted 🙁. You should consider doing those essays. Optional is usually a word that they use saying "it would make you stand out from the others" if you did write the essay.

51!? There has to be some sort of diminishing returns going on with that many schools. I mean at some point, you just start applying to schools that you have no chance at. If you have decent stats/ECs I would highly recommend slimming that number down.

Start writing while you wait for verification. Secondary burnout is rife after 30 or so; spreading them out over the next 6 weeks will help keep you fresh.

Secondary essay topics from 2011-2012, which will be 95% the same this year:

50+?

Man, and I thought >20 was awful torture...

Write them, like, now.

I mostly waited until verification, and it took me almost two weeks to get through the 13 that emailed me immediately afterwards. 51? dayuummm.
