SAVMA Symposium 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll be there. It's going to be wicked awesome!

Love to go but doubt I can spring for the travel. Does anyone know where the next 2-3 symposia will be held? I seem to remember seeing it on SAVMA site last fall, but I've looked all over for it since and can't find anything. If I know it's going to be in midwest in next year or two, I won't feel so bad about missing this.

Next year is at Purdue. I don't know about after that...

Last day to register for wetlabs/day-trips is TODAY! There are a lot of cool things planned, so if you haven't registered yet, get on it 🙂

Soooooooooo excited!!!! I am not sure what the final official count is, but there were a dozen first years from CSU who originally planned on going. I can't wait for the wetlabs (really hope I get in via the lottery), the lectures and just meeting folks. Yeah symposium!!!!

Quite obviously going to be here, doing some work and some play. It's going to be awesome, hold on tight!!! 😀 :biglove: :hardy:

So is the afterparty going to be back at your place?

We've got a fair number coming from WI too! (Including me, obviously. Any excuse to go back home to free food and warmer weather.)

Are people up for sharing info, like when arriving (flights) and also seeing about hotel rooms and cars? I know most people will be sharing cost/housing/rides with fellow folks from their own school, but maybe if there were some odd spots we could gather a list to help everyone out.

Let me know what you think.

I do not own a car and my place is very small (afterparty, HAH!), but I am definitely willing to answer questions people have about getting around Davis and stuff!! (Our volunteers will definitely attempt to make this as easy for everyone as possible during Symposium too!!)

Can't wait until symposium! I'll be getting to CA on Tuesday and spending a day in SF before heading to Davis. We've got about 40 people coming from Wisconsin.

Oregon is sending a pretty big contingent--I know at least 10-15 people from my class are going. We're on the quarter system like Davis, and since our admin won't give us time off to go normally, this is the only chance most of us will get since it falls during our spring break this year.

We have around 30 people going. Were also on the quarter system so it falls during our break which is great. I'm planning to do southern california with some classmates for pretty much the full week before the conference then flying up the coast.

Hey,

. Can't wait! Just wondering if anybody knows good places (cheap!!) to stay? I'm being accomodated very genorously by a UCD student, but as I'm over for 6 nights, I don't think it's fair for me to expect any accomodation outside of the 3/4 nights of the symposium.

Any suggestions/advice gratefully received. Looking forward to meeting some people over there!

Totally randomly, what's the general experience like at SAVMA? Is it academic, social, mixed?? Shot in the dark going over on a scholarship, so wondering what to expect!

Cheers.

did anyone sign up for the wet lab lottery and not get anything? i know a couple people from my class that happened too. All they got was a trip to the zoo 😛 lol

There are still a few days of the lottery left. They said to wait until the 22nd. However, I am one of those people currently with nothing.

yea i guess people are getting notified at diff times depending which lotteries they signed up with. some of my friends have no clue if they got anything yet and other received an email saying they got nothing.

does anyone know how SAVMA symposiums usually work in terms of wetlabs? how do other schools set it up? is it normal to have this lottery system? i think there should be some rule that you get at least one wetlab

Last year it was first come first serve at Wisconsin. People didn't like that either. I think it is a lose-lose situation.

I have not received an e-mail yet, but I did notice my credit card was charged for $15, so I got into one, no clue which one though, haha. I am actually ok with the lottery, but it would be nice to be gauranteed one spot.

When are most people arriving? I think a lot of people from CSU are heading out Wednesday night. I'm torn between trying to get to as many of my class lectures as possible and making sure not to miss out on any fun at the symposium. Based off the schedule, it looks like there are wetlabs Thursday, the opening/big get together Thursday night and then lectures/expo/wetlabs Friday and Saturday. Besides the wetlabs/trips on Thursday, are there any other day activities going on? Just want to make sure I have this all sorted out.

Update: Just found an e-mail from the 16th in my spam folder listing out my total charges. Got into the Avian Exam wetlab, not exactly the one I had high hopes for, but it's definitey an area I could use practice/more experience.

I'm not going but isn't there stuff going on from 8-5 thur-sat? I'm sure if you checked out the website it has a list of everything. http://savmasymposium2011.com/programs/ They also have evening events.

I think most of my friends are leaving Wed. Everyone going from my school is getting booked in the same hotel (unless they signed up later).

should be fun!! im excited for everyone who is going lol i wish i could go! but my fun will come in the summer 😀

had a school symposium mtg. yesterday...looks like we're bringing a group of 41. see you all there!

With 1400 attendees and people with varying levels of interest in the different labs I don't think it's possible to enforce a rule like that. 😱

edit: I didn't get into any wetlabs but I'm coordinating volunteers for them so whatever.

No wetlabs for me either. 🙁

So who's up for some drinking instead?

I got the Safari West Trip😀 but no wet labs...super excited!! I wanted the SF trip too, but that is easily fixed, bunch of classmates are going in on a rental car and we are just gonna drive ourselves over there.

just back on SDN for the first time in a few months. attending from RVC. booked into the APHIS wetlab on Friday morning, and the path lab on Saturday afternoon.

i'll be arriving in San Francisco at 11:00am on Thursday the 24th, and getting a rental car to drive to Davis - so if anyone wants a a ride over, i'm happy to meet up at the airport and provide a lift.

🙂

Actually I know where a couple are going to be.... Potentially my house - and definitely a house near campus where some of my classmates live. I remember last year the OSU kids partied harrrrrrd, hope you guys are bringin' it again this year.

Oh and btw... kickball Thursday night.... y'all better bring it. And if you're not the athletic types - my bestie from Chicago is DJing AND the awesome lads of Bog Spavin are playing.... get ready for killer danceparty mayhem.

Anyone who wants to meet up and/or definitely do a houseparty holler at me, I'll try to remember to check SDN again before the madness descends.

This is exactly correct. We had approximately 15234293423204 meetings on how to handle the WL/Day Trip situation and we just had to go with lottery because then at least everyone gets an equal chance.

A few of the events had no cap (VERT Airlift Demo on Friday is one) so lots of people got in, but for most space is very limited. I've been working on Symposium full time since April of 2010 and I didn't get a freakin' wet lab, but shrug, it's all good, that's just how it goes.

There is SO much to do, you won't be bored, and you WILL have a great time, dammit.

For whoever asked: the only activities Thursday are Day Trips, Wet Labs, and the awesome Raley Field party! Make sure you get to campus and get registered before getting on the bus to Raley, though!!

Hope to see a bunch of you there!

Would love and try and touch base with any SND'ers while in Davis...esp. 2012-2013 peeps...is there a note board or something like that when we get there?

Hmmm I don't think we have one specifically planned, but on the 2nd floor of Valley Hall (the main building) there are quite a few cork boards... Want me to ask the higher-ups if we can make a special SDN note board up there? The one I have in mind is in a central location and not inside any of the lecture halls so it won't mean awkwardly sneaking in and out to check and see if anyone's posted on it.

One of my classmates made a really cool sign when I posted our volunteer sign up sheets on that board, maybe she can make another to mark off the SDN message area!

Great idea LVT2DVM! Thanks!😀

That sounds great! and thanks back at cha for working on that.

I'll be there as well. 🙄

VMRCVM has at least 20 students going. I don't know if any more signed up at the last minute before the deadline, but I'm excited! Going to stay in Union Sq in SF Tuesday night, hangout in SF Wednesday, train back to SF that night, and the only wetlab I got was the SF day trip on Friday, so I guess I'll be seeing lots of SF. I almost wish I could do something other than the SF day trip on Friday and do another wetlab since I'm going there on Tuesday, but it's a big city, right? Might as well see as much as I can since I've never been to California.

Why not do something else on Wednesday? You can easily take BART across the bay and hang out in Berkeley. Or if you can find out where you're going on the day trip on Friday, explore a different part of SF on Wednesday. There's lots to see!

Hey Everyone

I am going to do my VERY VERY BEST to try to remember to put up a SDN Message Board Area sign on our upstairs main corkboard first thing tomorrow (Thursday) am.

Here are directions to the corkboard.

Walk into Valley Hall (main building where registration is, can't miss it)
Go up the main staircase in the foyer (only one, can't miss it)
Turn right and start down the hallway in front of you.
Right as you go into the hallway there is a big corkboard on the right hand wall.

That's it! You're there! Hooray.

I will even try to bring some thumbtacks or steal them from the other corkboards.

I will also try to see if anyone's down for a houseparty Thurs or Sat late-night.

If anyone wants to plan get togethers anywhere FEEL FREE TO POST ON THE CORKBOARD!!!!

I might forget all of this though. I just spent 5 hours doing spreadsheets and emails for the volunteers =/ I'm a little cracked out. If you don't see anything there... Just create your own SDN message area! Hooray!

Trigger pulls tomorrow at 7am. I'm stoked. You should be too.

xoxo

I only saw a tiny bit on Wednesday. My crew and I went to Alcatraz, Pier 39 (saw a magic show!), and just walked around. I'm planning to go to the Golden Gate and that side of SF tomorrow. I hope some other travelers are interested in trekking around. I also have plans to visit some of the veg-friendly eateries whilst in town.

Starlene, you well know if there is a house party I am there😎
