Hello everyone! I have been invited for an interview at SCCO on 9/13 and I was wondering if anyone who has had an interview there before could tell me about their interview experience. I have been looking on the SDN interview page and am feeling overwhelmed by the number of questions. I've also watched the SCCO interview videos but those were from 2011 so I'm not sure how accurate they are. I would greatly appreciate your advice and interview tips! Thank you!

Hi! Firstly, congrats on your interview! I'll try to give you some insight. I had my interview at SCCO in October 2018 and it was my first one, so I was super nervous. My personal experience was very positive and my interactions with everyone there really helped with my anxiety. I don't remember everything but I believe you're split into groups and depending on which one you're in, you go see someone for prerequisite stuff or start your interviews. There's also some down time to chat with current students, which was really nice. Everyone's so friendly. Afterwards you all have lunch and then tour the campus and Ketchum Health! It's very relaxing after the interview.

For the interview itself, it's one on one. I had mine with a professor in a closed room, and she had a file with my CV in it - definitely brush up on your CV and your essays so you remember what you put on them! The two main questions I was asked were "why optometry" and "why SCCO." I did a lot of research in undergrad, so I also got asked a lot about my research - my interviewer seemed genuinely interested, which was super cool. I also had some questions ready for after the interview, mainly about research and community service opportunities at SCCO. Everything was very chill though! She was really easy to talk to, and our interview felt more like a conversation than anything. Of course, that depends on your interviewer, but a lot of people I talked to had similar positive experiences!

For preparation - I don't recall watching any videos, but I did browse SDN for questions and tried to answer as many of them as I could. I basically copied and pasted them into a document and made bullet points for what I would say if asked those questions. This ended up being super helpful for me (I only had around half a day to prepare - long story) so I recommend doing it! If anything I ended up overprepared, but that's better than nothing haha.

Feel free to ask me if you have any other questions!

Thank you so much for your detailed response! I really appreciate it! I'm starting to feel a little better about the interview process. Do you know about how long the actual interview is? On the SCCO website, it says that it takes about 40 minutes but I have talked with a few of the current students there and they said it was more around 20-30 minutes. Again, thank you!

For me it was 35 minutes if I remember correctly. My interviewer and I hit it off though, so I think that's why we took a little longer! I heard a lot of people were around 30 minutes.
