After speaking with the admissions advisor several times throughout the year, she stated that no applicant will receive an interview @ SCCO unless they have a solid 3.0 gpa. I am seriously @ a 2.9, so close, so I am frustrated! I graduated from UCLA and now i'm taking a couple courses at a community college to bring that GPA, but grades won't be out until January 2007. Why do I hear of all these other applicants on the forum being accepted with 2.8 gpas? ughhhhhh so frustrated since this is the only school I wanted to apply to. By the way my OAT stats: TS 320 AA 340 RC 380.

Hey FLCBRUIN84,
Do you know if 3.0 GPA is for overall or for prerequisites only? Thanks

i know how you feel...it is frustrating. i'm in a similar situation with you. I have a 3.16 GPA from UCB with OAT's of 340 TS and 320 AA but my RC is only 290 and there are other people getting accepted already with 260 and 270 on the forum. They told me to retake the OATS but I dont think it's worth it because i've already gotten 4 other interviews and been accepted one school already. just hang in there! goodluck!

I was told by Jane Ann Munroe over at SCCO, that the 3.0 gpa minimum refers to the overall gpa. 🙁
I was going to apply to SCCO too but I guess, on the bright side, now I'll be saving $75+ dollars.

yea I asked admission officers and they said the same thing 🙁 gluck flcbruin. gooo bruins!

Yeah i think SCCO really looks at the RC score because when Dr. Munroe (the admissions counselor) was reviewing my score she said, "we see a AA of 340 and RC of 380." I found it weird that she emphasized my RC score so maybe thats why they want you to retake the OAT. ugh i can never take that test again!

the whole overall 3.0 thing isnt true because when i called to ask, the counselor told me its their pre-calculated gpa on their prereqs. if its based on undergrad i have below a 3.0 but my master gpa is way higher. i need at least a 3.0 to stay in the program. so its definitely not based on current gpa status. i understand the frustration :/

That sucks I didn't even know that! Now I just wasted 75 dollars. SCCO shouldve stated that specifically on their website...I guess they want to take ppls money anyway..

i coulda sworn the app fee for scco was only 50 bucks.

Yes, it is...but I'm also including transcript fees from more than one colleges and distribution fees from the reference file system...

Does anyone know how they calculate the gpa for the pre-requesites? For example, do they take the better grades in bio, chem, etc. if you took more than the required units, or just the first quarter/semester that you took the classes? I do hope that the thing about the pre-calculated gpa w/ pre-reqs is true and not the overall needing to be 3.0.

I am also at 2.9 and in the process of applying. I've graduated already, however, so it would be very hard for me to try raise the gpa over again. I'm hoping my OAT will come out good.

it doesnt matter what you get on your OAT because if you dont have a 3.0, they wont give you an interview. i talked to the admissions counselor who said my OAT was great and so were all my experiences, but my precalculated was 0.03 off from 3.0. i suggest if you have applied already, give them a call and they can calculate it for you from your file immediately. good luck.

I would imagine that Overall GPA and Sci GPA is looked upon differently right? However, science GPA has to be a certain level before you're granted an interview chance. I know NECO has a 2.7 policy in science GPA before they grant you an interview...
i'm glad for this thread because i was thinking of applying to SCCO too.

i am a current 3rd year at scco and i recall during my days of applying, scco didn't require a min 3.0 gpa. i supposed they are beefing up criteria because of the increased number of applicants. also, i'm sure they want to admit more academically "strong" students because i think, and i do emphasize think, they want those students to do well on nbeo, thus allowing scco to boast of scoring higher than national average. scco is big on that! this year our class disappointed them by going under. so they figured they need to accept "smarter" folks. that's my theory.

yeah im from boston and i took a flight out to scco to introduce myself to the admissions office and they told me flat out i wouldnt get an interview this year. i have 2.9 overall gpa too, but my prereq gpa is substantially higher and even higher than their average! as are my OAT scores. but they still said no go. boo. i really liked the school and the state of the art facilities, but i was honestly put off by how much they bash on state schools like berkeley. it's true that every school is looking for something different so i guess there is at least one program that will fit your academic profile. i hope!
