scheduling in-service exams during scheduled vacations

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My understanding is that programs must have information regarding their vacation offerings in their contracts. They must also provide clear policies regarding vacations. Furthermore, the vacations must comply with local/state/federal laws. I don't believe their are any other requirements.

I believe that if they do not state that you have to take tests during vacation that you could complain, but good luck with that. You won't endear yourself with anyone for it and I have a hard time believing that the ACGME would make a big deal out of it unless it was a systematic and very egregious problem. It isn't ideal, but medical training, despite the work hour reduction, still requires a lot of personal life sacrifices.

like raryn, my program would not allow anyone to take vacation time during the time for the inservice exam…if you NEED to take vacation during that time, you'll probably be SOL.

ACGME does not get involved in vacation/ITEs other than you need vacation and that ITEs are program dependent etc. Your program is not violating any ACGME policy except that they cannot make you be on call or attend mandatory lectures etc during scheduled vacations.

Your program should have clarified the dates of your in-service during orientation or early on, when discussing vacation. If you have to be off for vacation during that time, as noted above, you're SOL. If they have assigned you that as your vacation week, then you would have a case to request a different time so that you are able to be out of town rather than staying for an exam.

In my program, if you were on vacation or nights during the dates of the in-service, you didn't take the exam.
