hey guys, my question is when september 1 comes around I hope I will get some interview offers however i will be doing two months of surgery electives during sept and oct. If i got offers can I schedule them later for november or december? is this frowned upon? or is it just about scheduling any date that convienent. It seems all my interviews will have to be clumped in nov, dec, jan.

anybody else experienced this before or is in the same boat?

thanks

I applied for GS last yr, and of the 25 interviews i received, the vast majority of them were offered only from mid-nov thru 1st week of feb.... It will likely be a rarity for an interview to be offered before Nov 1. You'll just have to schedule wisely, b/c many of the interview dates you'll be offered will overlap, and you have to account for travel time and pre-interview get-togethers the evening before the interview with residents. Group them geographically if at all possible. I managed to complete all of mine between Nov 13 and Dec 20 - I'd scheduled a computer-aided tutorial for last 2 wks of Nov and a 4 wk vacation block in Dec, and it was nice to have it all over with before winter break.

Good luck.

I might end up doing my medicine sub-i in November. Is that a mistake? I don't think I'll be able to take time off... between what months should we make sure to have 'easier' electives?

I worked my tail off July thru September, took an easier month in Oct b/c I scheduled my Step 2 for end of Oct. Ideally, you'd hope to have a flexible schedule for nov or dec and jan so you're not always taking off of your rotation for interviews. I literally spent 3 weeks on the road without going home in Nov/Dec b/c I drove to all my interviews - I scheduled them in a circular route so I wouldnt waste more time backtracking on my route. I wouldnt exactly recommend driving as much as I did (7,000 miles), but it was nice to get away and see some different terrain.

thanks deb..some of my interviews hopefully i can get done while doing my electives. at least the ones that close by. I have off in December so that shouldnt be a problem.

how far in december do the programs inteview before closing for Xmas holiday?

Looks like xmas falls on a sunday this year, so maybe up until dec 23 (I had one dec 20). I dont think any of the programs I was interviewing at offered any interviews in the week between xmas and new yrs.
