Can anyone explain if there really is a strategy to scheduling rotations? We schedule here very soon for 3rd year, some people say it doesn't matter some say it is critical.

For what it is worth, I want to go into a surgery subspecialty. Does that change how I should try to schedule?

As a general rule, I do not think when you have your clerkships in 3rd year is super critical.

If you are interested in a surgery subspecialty, I would do Internal Medicine before Surgery.

You could try to do OB before surgery for a little added surgical experience prior as well.

I was thinking about that exact progression, thanks for the input!

I highly recommend the OB/GYN, internal med, surgery route. I left OB being comfortable in the OR and with the knowledge to tie several types of knots.

But, if you can't have IM before surgery don't worry, I did not have the opportunity to take IM before surgery and my shelf score did not suffer.

Ok, so the our rotations come in packages of two for scheduling purposes. (for example, surgery and OB must be taken back to back and I.M./psych must be taken back to back. but the order of packages can vary (i.e. I can pick to take ob before surgery or surgery before ob, my choice).

I hope to go in either of these orders, do they sound O.K.?

Psych, I.M. OB/Gyn, Surgery, Peds, Family Medicine (choice #1)

Psych, I.M., Peds, F.M, OB/Gyn, Surgery (choice #2)

If you need to take step 2 early it helps a lot to have IM be your last rotation. The you can just take a few weeks to brush up on the other stuff and you are set. I didn't plan it that way but it worked out very well to be able to focus on IM for a while right before taking CK. You will definitely be your smartest right after your IM rotation.

Most people don't get these ideal schedules yet they still match well. I wouldn't sweat it much.

I always get screwed on these lottery drawings, so I am not optimistic, haha. I just want to submit the best schedule for me, just in case this is one of the rare times I get lucky. As long as I don't get surgery first I'll be happy.
