so how do scholarships work exactly at these schools? is a way for them to compete and get good students to come there (basically like cheaper tuition)?? or are they need based? I have 3.5 science GPA and 28 MCAT, so I assume I am very competitive--but my parents are paying for school and have money. Does that mean I won't get any?

Most schools are based on academics and not on need. They usually send your scholarship award letter along with your acceptance.

Some other scholarships certainly will factor in financial needs or other factors (ECs, alumni relationships, minority race, female gender, resident of a certain state, etc), but those scholarships are mostly for pod upperclassmen anyways.

The entrance awards that the schools themselves give are generally based on performance (gpa/MCAT), and they are also somewhat based on when you apply. In general, when the scholarship account is gone, it's gone until next year... so early application will give you a better chance at a scholarship... and more $ in that scholarship.

This is not the information I received from the not-so-great schools. From the way I understood it, they give scholarships to anyone they want at any point in the admissions process. For example, someone who interviews two weeks before the semester starts with a 29 MCAT will still receive the largest amount. Keep in mind that the lower tiered schools can offer large scholarships because even though they offer huge scholarships doesn't mean they are actually giving them away. Most of the best applicants won't end up going there so it doesn't hurt the schools to offer gigantic numbers because they know it's very likely they won't have to apply that scholarship amount. They usually attract the lower end students who coincidentilly don't qualify for any scholarships.

If you don't care where you go, do the math and find out who will end up saving you the most money in the end.
