Hi To All,

I'm starting school in the fall and I was wondering if anyone here has/had ever received the SDS scholarship and how much you got in total aid. Obviously, the total amount varies from school to school because tuition prices are different, lab fees are different, etc... I spoke with my financial aid administrator at my school and he said that I will receive a portion of the total money they get from the government in June. I was just wondering if the award is a significant amount or not, basically. Thanks so much for any help in advance!!!

How does one apply for the SDS scholarship?

The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program provides scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled in health professions and nursing programs. Provided that your school is participating in the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program.

You can apply for this scholarship at the student financial aid office of the school where you are or intend to be enrolled. They will guide you about the application and eligibility.

That's exactly the process I took to apply. I never had to fill out any forms or anything though...my financial aid advisor said it was based on my parent's income. Now, there will probably be more paperwork for me to fill out once it gets here. Our school didn't receive funds from the federal government until June, so we are still waiting to see what happens. If anyone has a low EFC and has parents whose income is really low...it's a great idea to apply to this. Anything helps nowadays, right???

It was $3,000 at my school. I applied in the Fall and they awarded it in the Spring. There really wasn't much else to fill out... but I did have to submit my parents' tax information. There was also an option to write a paragraph to talk about why you feel like you deserved the scholarship.

Oh ok, yeah I contacted my financial aid administrator yesterday and he said it just all depends on how much they get from the government. Obviously, the ones with the more extreme cases of low-income get more of an award. He said it ranges from $275-$6,000. I guess we'll just wait and see, but I was under the impression that it was a lot more than that when I read the "guidelines" released by the federal government. Oh well, anything helps. That will be that much more I don't have to take out in GradPlus loans I guess, lol! Good luck to you at OU!
