Hi, this is my first post to the Student Doctor Forum. I was wondering if anyone has ever been awarded or has found Scholarships for students planning to return to school to complete Premedical classes. I have done some searching and haven't come up with anything as of yet. Most scholarships seem to be targeted toward fulltime students enrolled in a degree program. I suspect there are not too many of these Scholarships available, if any.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi Ryan1,
I'm interested in the same question but for PT school pre-reqs. Hope someone has an answer : ) Sorry I'm not more help. JRC

sorry, have never heard of a scholarship for post-bacc or pre-pt.

If I were a donor, I'd be more likely to try to assist people who had been accepted to med or pt school rather than those who might be accepted -- acceptance rates to MD are maybe 40-45% typically, any scholarship that funded pre-md would run the risk of assisting people who ultimately would not be accepted, sorry..

on the plus side, what lots of us have done is keep working in our day jobs, and take 1-2 classes at a time at nights or weekends -- from what I've seen for scholarships, a typical working person will make way more than many scholarships would be -- $1K or even $3K doesn't go that far given tuition costs today at many schools.

another path if you're intent on going faster through this would be to fund it through loans. Remember, as a future physician, you're one who will be contributing to others' education expenses, healthcare, etc.. not a lot of programs will be established to help poor starving future physicians. (wouldn't it be nice if there were?)

If you have a previous bachelors degree, you could take your pre-med coursework at a community college if your community college is of high quality (can save some money if this is true). Also check and see if the medical schools that you want to apply to will take community college coursework (a few won't). Other than that, loans would be an option but you do have to be enrolled as a fulltime student in order to get most scholarship money.

Many many employers will provide tuition reimbursement. Mine does 5K/year. You can generally sign up to take a class at any school without applying if you are in a non-degree program. More and more schools are offering evening and online classes. This is how I did all my premed classes and more.

I've found a handful of scholarships that you would qualify for on Peterson's Scholarships website. FastWeb.com and Scholarships.com have a handful of scholarships I am eligible for as a nontrad about to start med school, but Peterson's seems to have more for us older students in undergrad, post-bacc, grad, or professional, it seems. I wish I had known about these before! I would definitely have tried to get scholarships for my post-bacc premed.

The certificate of intro to sciences program I was in for my premed coursework qualified for federal financial aid. I had to file a FAFSA and send the results to the school. Maybe there's a program at the school you're taking classes in that also qualifies for financial aid?

I am doing my 2nd bachelor at Cal State Long Beach (State School that sends their students to UCSF and Stanford med school) and was awarded State University Grant for 2050 $ per semester which covers full time tuition per semester. Also I am getting around 12k of Stafford loan per year.

I also applied to CSUN (Northridge) but they have a policy of not granting any money to 2nd bachelor students. 🙁

I am very very grateful and happy about all this.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a link at CSLB's website for their premed post-bacc. Neither could I for CSUN. Could you please provide me with the links?

Also, how reputed has the program been compared to other post-bacc programs like USC, BM, JH, etc. ?

Hey there. Sorry, I have been really busy with the move and my very first semester of doing pre med. Just finished my last final yesterday and I strongly believe Iwill come out with all A.

I love CSULB (Cal State Unviersity of Long Beach) Unfortunately, because of California budget crisis, there has been extreme increase in application rate to my school.

CSULB does not have a formal post bach program like they have at SFSU or PENN or what not, so when you are here, you will be swamped with all the rest of the undergrads student. The only class I tried to and didn't get in this past semester was Bio I, but then again, I ended up taking Phy I instead which worked out better. I am 32, look like 23, and I have definitely seem a few older older looking students sitting in my class.

FYI, average GPA of science major at CSULB is 2.6, which to me shows that the science classes here are very strong.
Good luck to you.
