Hi Everyone,

I am wondering what financial aid is available in Dental school. I am applying to all of the dental schools in CA. My question: do dental schools offer any other financial aid other than loans and military based scholarships? I am aware that most of my education will be funded through loans but I am wondering if any schools offer grants or scholarships. If so, do you know of the criteria for applying/receiving them? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

I received a VERY generous scholarship offer from Michigan last cycle (~20k/yr) and I think a number of people here on the forums received similar offers from them. I ended up declining Michigan and choosing UCLA who also offered me a very generous scholarship (although not nearly as much as Michigan). There have been several others on these forums that have been offered scholarships from their respective dental schools upon acceptance (i.e. you don't apply for them - the schools award them to particular candidates upon acceptance) that are typically based on merit via your grades, DAT, extra curricular experience, etc.

Yes, I am a CA resident. I have a 3.8 GPA, 3.5 science and 21 on the DAT. 21 AA, 21 TS, but 17 PAT. I also was a collegiate athlete. So basically, some CA schools offer scholarships, and I just wait until I (hopefully) get accepted to find out if I have received one?

Basically yes, some scholarships (usually relatively small compared to cost of attendance) do exist but you'll have to wait until acceptance or even post-acceptance/commitment/matriculation to find out. The number available though is tiny compared to class sizes so I wouldn't go in counting on receiving one.

Okay, thank you.

Are grants available for students with a financially disadvantaged background?
