Hi Everyone! Yesterday was an AMAZING day. I’m so happy and grateful to have received multiple acceptances but I have a question about scholarships. I received a scholarship offer from one school for a considerable amount of money. Is it possible that other schools might still offer scholarships after the initial offer and not on the day the offer is given?

Has anyone ever heard of someone that asked a school whether there were any scholarships left the school could offer or negotiated a better situation? Just wondering. Thank you!

My goal is to not come off as rude or ungrateful to any of the schools that have accepted me, so any help is appreciated.

It never hurts to ask. They will not rescind an acceptance because you asked for more money or to at least be considered for any additional scholarships. I received scholarships from 3 of the 4 schools I was accepted to. When I called my state school and told them I had decided to attend a different school the Dean called me back and offered to double the scholarship offer if I reconsidered. They have already accepted you and offered some scholarship money so they are invested in you coming. I would ask, every dollar helps. Current 4th year here.

Who exactly do you tell? Do you just reject their offer, say under "reason:" that you got a better price at a different school, and hope that they call you back?

Accept the offer as is. If you are serious about the school go ahead and send your deposit as well. As March/April approaches schools will be ancy to have all seats confirmed. If you call around that time and express how difficult it would be for you to attend and it's even better if you get a scholarship from somewhere else (some schools give out scholarships on acceptance day, others will send them out early spring), they will be more willing to make additional financial arrangements. The Dean is who would be able to make this call and then it goes through the proper financial aid channels.

So I should pay deposits to multiple schools?

If it's not too much a financial burden I would. I sent deposits to my top two schools. One an expensive out of state+ scholarship and my state school+scholarship. By the time the deadline to confirm your spot came around I had decided to go oos. I called my state school and thanked them for the opportunity but I had decided to go elsewhere due to a higher scholarship offer and the dean then decided to double his offer if I reconsidered. Not saying this is a regular occurrence but schools have money to offer to the students they really want to join their program and a December acceptance at least shows they really want you there.

What do think if I have offers from several schools (all that I interviewed at, including a few "top" schools) but did not receive any notification of scholarships yesterday? Is it unlikely that schools would want to offer me scholarships out in March/April?

Hi, sorry to go off track but it seems like you all have experience in this area. The Dean at a school told me I received a scholarship and that it will be outlined in the letter they email. I didn’t see it in the offer letter. Any ideas on what to do? I don’t want to ask so soon but I’m antsy. Thank you!

I was wondering the same thing! Are scholarship offers usually included in the official acceptance letter that some schools mail? And if you don't get a scholarship, will they just not include that? or will they say you are not eligible for a scholarship?

Some schools offer their scholarships later on like maybe end of December. But if you already heard of students getting scholarships for that school Friday, then maybe not. Then again, maybe someone can deny that seat that included the scholarship, and they can offer it to someone else.

I'd just email the admissions secretary and ask politely if the documentation is available. They understand that you're on a timer to make a decision.

Right on! Thanks @ProspectivePostPreDent I appreciate the insight. I'll email tomorrow and let you guys know what's up.

Hi all, so to clarify, the Dean offered the scholarship via phone but it was not noted in the offer letter they emailed. So I called the finaid office yesterday to ask if there was documentation available regarding the scholarship offer. She said just to hang tight and wait for your financial aid package to come lol.

Have you filled out the FAFSA? I would almost assume it does not matter for dental schools because almost all scholarships are merit based vs need based, but I'm just wondering!

i could be wrong, but my understanding is that you still have to fill out FAFSA in order to get the federal school loans, so you'll want to do it anyway

Yes, I already filled out the FAFSA! Yes you are right, scholarships are separate from federal loans. So you need to fill out the FAFSA regardless.
