Hey Guys,

I have been quite shocked and lucky enough to get a few early interviews and I would like you guys to rank what I have thus far (by either what you think of the school, surroundings or simply which you would go to and why if you got accepted to them all). Thanks for all of your help!

I've heard that one of the main points of medical school is to prepare you for residency and for getting the best residency that fits you. If so, then look towards KCUMB, because it is very successful in doing that. Over 90% of students get their first choice of residency. Also noteworthy, depending on what you want, is that there is a high rate of specialization as compared to the national average. Furthermore, our integrated curriculum is downright awesome and our path department is first rate, which should provide an edge during rotations and residency. I really align with the core values and mission of KCUMB. The school has a longer history, as compared to the others listed in your list, and is well-establised, being founded in 1916. There are two dual-degree programs available at KCUMB if that sort of thing interests you: DO/MBA and DO/MS in bioethics. There are also a number of undergraduate fellowships available, including an anatomy, an OMM/OMT, and a research fellowship.

KCUMB has a clinical competency center which simulates office and hospital encounters with mechanical patient simulators 🙂cool🙂 and standardized patients. KCMO is a decent sized city and you can pretty much entertain yourself (but you won't have much time, anyway) and find what you need. KCMO has a low COL, which helps when you are living off loans.

However, all that aside, you need to feel out which school fits you the best. It's good to look at stuff on paper and to hear what others have to say, but you also need to trust your gut, beyond logical reasonings. You'll get a chance to feel out the schools when you interview. Take note. I basically fell in love with KCUMB during my interview and it became my top choice during that time. I developed a real sense that I would be happy attending there and could really thrive; that's a good driving force to have in addition to other logical elements.

Good luck.

What is the schedule of classes at KCUMB? M-F 8-5 routine for the first two years?

The curriculum is essentially systems-based, with additional and innovative features. The link above can provide more details.

Truthfully, I can't tell you what the schedule looks like beyond what I'm experiencing right now as an MS1. So far we have classes between 8-12 with an hour lunch break, followed by classes/lab in the afternoon, usually until 5pm, but not necessarily continuous. The morning 8-12 class schedule is essentially continuous, one right after another, but there is some degree of variability in the afternoon class/lab schedule. Within the weekly schedule, there are periods of formally designated independent study (on Fridays, so far) as well as non-class time in the afternoon (precise periods depending on group designation). Classes/labs aren't always until 5pm.

Right now we are deep into FOM, or foundations of medicine. This section lasts for 6 weeks. So far the schedule has been pretty eclectic subject-wise. We appear to have two 2-hr section quizzes and a big final for this section. IOCS-Clin, which includes OMT, has weekly quizzes at the start of lab.

The next section is MSK. I don't know how that's structured yet. My mind is focused on getting through FOM right now. 😱

Anyway, the link that I posted above should give you an idea of how it's done.

I have a friend at NSU and the only thing she doesn't like about it is the fact that they start so early in July each year. Other than that, she did a really good job of selling the school to me so that I would apply. In her first year she was able to have two international experiences, one in Hondoras and one in Kenya/Senegal.
