So this cycle I applied to over 30 schools, and I was planning to pay for the application process with a paid internship this summer. Unfortunately the group I was interning with, went broke halfway through and had to let me go. I now have about $1500 saved up, but cannot pay for 36 secondaries, and I need some help maximizing my chances while minimizing my costs.

Full Stats: Giving you all the info so, i can get the best feedback. Thank you.

Any input would be helpful, thank you!

Morehouse and Meharry are historically black (HBCU, as gyngyn mentioned above). Many public schools will have a strong in-state bias (Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana etc); if you're really looking to cut down, I'd combo through and slash state schools that you don't have strong ties to/particular incentive to attend. Other schools get so many applicants, it's difficult to stand out (Jefferson and GWU come to mind). Good luck!

Listen to the feedback you've received in the above posts. Keep in mind that you're fine for any DO program and will likely have better luck with them. Your MCAT of 29 is within striking distance of the schools on my list below, but MD schools prefer people with at least a 30 (10/10/10). So, consider NYCOM and Touro-NY since they're in your backyard.

So, I'd prioritize with all NY schools (SUNY Stony Brook impresses me as the most competitive of the SUNY's)

Hofstra???

To start: delete the two CA schools (unless you can abide Loma Linda's abstinence policies), and the HBCU's.

Yea I knew about the non-debauchery policies haha, but I am involved in a local church and did have a strong rec letter from my pastor for the school. But there's no point to waste $100. Thank you!

I definitely plan on cutting some of the more competitive schools where id be OOS. My problem with cutting out the HBCs is that after checking the MSAR, these schools do have 10-33% of asian students in their matriculating class (I am south asian). Also looking at their mission statements, my community service club, my internship with TFA and some other activities definitely worked with underserved communities, and I think that would look really great to these colleges. I'm having a lot of difficulty deciding to keep these 3 schools or not, but based on that info what do you think?

Hofstra???

This is a great list, thank you for the feedback! I am applying to NYCOM, TOURO, LECOM and PCOM as "safeties." Their application fees weren't so bad. I didn't apply to Quinnipiac because of the cost ($75,000) and I talked to some Hofstra administration people, and they said their average MCAT was a 33 which definitely deterred me from applying.

Quinnipiac's website says their med school is $49650. The total cost of attendance is $75000. Just letting you know so you don't remove it for the wrong reasons 🙂

Best of luck!

Appreciate you looking out for me! The 75000+ a year and the high cost of living in Connecticut is definitely gonna keep me from applying unfortunately.

You can't consider the 75k a year and a "high cost of living" separately because its already factored in just fyi. Many private/oos schools are at this level of cost of attendance. Ex: Georgetown Cost of attendance is 80k

TFA is good. Whether that will translate into a validated commitment is in the eye of the beholder. Tell us if you get an interview!

Did you investigate the mission statements of each of these schools? Quinnipiac's, for instance, is designed specifically for URM's.

Actually only 9 out of 60 students in the incoming class are considered URM. The mission statement is not designed specifically for URMs but rather for those who demonstrate an interest in primary care.

Yea, i've definitely been perusing through them, as I try to figure out where i'd fit in best. I dont think I am considered a URM as a south asian though.

Definitely true, medical school will put me in debt no matter what. But if i am lucky enough to actually have multiple acceptances, price will probably be the major factor.
