7. BME Lab: 450 hrs + poster presentation and First place section award
8. 31 hours shadowing over 7 different specialties
9. GED tutor volunteer 250 hours
10. Other extracurricular activities: Gap year has so far been spent caring for grandfather post-surgery (hours variable, maybe 200?). Will start a research project in April. I May start working with a mobile clinic that goes to nursing homes, beginning end of Feb.
11. List: Wayne State, Central Michigan, MSU, Western Michigan, Oakland, U Michigan, RUSH, George Washington, Wake Forest, Vermont, Tulane. Maybe Case Western and Albert Einstein

I would like to know if any schools out of state may be worth applying to. Also, what are my chances, and should I address some issues, maybe low research or diversification of clinical experiences during my gap years, or postpone applying this year? Also, is 31 shadowing considered low? I am actively trying to improve this but am having little success. Thank you!

You do not have any non clinical volunteering besides tutoring and schools are looking for 150+ hours in activities such as food bank or homeless shelter. Also another 20 hours of physician shadowing would be helpful. Rush expects many hundreds or thousands of hours of non clinical volunteering. When you accumulate those hours I suggest these schools:

Welcome to the forums.

It's not clear if you are an engineering major. If so, you should look into the engineering-curricula schools: Carle Illinois, Texas A&M EnMed, and Arizona State.

You don't have service orientation non-clinical activities, so you are at risk of getting screened out at most schools. We prefer getting 50 hours of in-person physician shadowing. Caring for a family member is honorable, but the hours themselves do not move the needle for screening (usually).
