I'm putting together the list of schools to apply to this summer and I'm wondering about insurance. A group plan is important to me because insurance costs are high and I have a medical condition. Which schools offer group plans and rates?

Touro-CA had a pretty decent PPO plan, Western's medical insurance is :bullcrap:

LECOM-B has a school plan. At least here you are required to either be on the schoo's plan or on a spouses plan.

I'm on my wife's so can't comment on the specifics (cost, etc...). I know last year it was real nice, and like everything else costs are going UP so now to keep premiums the same it has a higher deductible.

But as far as I know pre-existing conditions are not a problem, and it's usually just factored into financial aid loans.

You can get SOMA insurance if the school doesn't offer a plan. Unfortunately, their prescription drug coverage is nowhere near adequate for someone with Diabetes, etc. There are ways to get your drugs for free though, I recommend getting a good FP if you end up in a school w/o insurance, and ask them about local agencies that help with getting free prescriptions (I just found one, works amazingly well).

LECOM-B's health plan is AWESOME! It's Blue Cross Blue Shield...covers 100% of everything after your copays.

Pre-existing conditions don't change your rate. They don't care.

The network is HUGE. Some of the other schools I was looking at required you to go to the school's docs, which is lame. And most insurance plans only cover 80% of fees, not the full 100%.

Office copays are around 20-30 bucks. Prescriptions are around $15-20 too.

Literally everything is covered. Allergy shots, pregnancy, Heroin addiction treatment (but no more than 3 times a year lol 😱), surgeries, anesthesia, derm, chiropractic/omm.

You don't need a referral to see a specialist. ER visits are ~$50, but this is waived if you get admitted (I think...)

This is all from memory, so don't quote me on this stuff, but it's close.

There's also a dental plan, but I don't have that since my father-in-law is a dentist...but it's supposed to be a decent dental plan.

I am gonig to use medicaid. As med students we all pretty much qualify and i am not going to spend another 5k per year on medical insurance.

IBX? Yep! PCOM has the same one. I'm not altogether pleased with some of the dinky co-pays for seeing specialists and such, but whatever.
IBX practically owns Pennsylvania, so we get the cream of the crop for "in-network"

This is a joke, right? My school won't accept medicaid as proper medical insurance.

I absolutely recommend this. I mean why pay for your own medical care? Why not just join the ranks of those sucking on the government teat?

Too bad more aren't like you....then maybe doctor's salaries will be as competitive as school teachers.

Oh and as great an idea you might think this is, should you ever need any kind of care, you will not be impressed with what Medicaid provides.

I'm also 99% sure that no med school around will accept that as proper insurance. We are required to either purchase the school's coverage or provide proof of coverage on a parents' or spouse's plan. Most schools are the same. Medicaid doesn't count.

At one of my interviews a student told me that he uses medicaid as his coverage and the school never gave him any problems.

So if some schools require us to be on either a spouses' or our parents' medical insurance, what if we are Army Medical Reserve and am receiving person insurance through there?
Will schools accept our own outside medical insurance plan?

How is the SOMA plan? Anyone have experience with it? Also, can you buy prescription drug coverage separately if you don't want to go through their mail-order plan for that?

SOMA has a plan?? Wow. I'll check that out.

You guys just keep revealing more and more fantastic information that gets me pumped about school in a few months!

I'm officially jealous.

Can someone comment on the plans offered by DMU, KCOM, UNE, and LMU?

I understand KCUMB doesn't have a plan. Is that correct? Isn't it unusual for a school to not offer something for their students? I assume coverage is required if you're in med school.

I am just having a really hard time believing that anyone would apply to school's based on what health insurance they reccomend you get. I am no longer shocked at anything I read on here.

Please don't judge those of us who consider this to be important. I currently pay $600 a month for health insurance so going to a school that doesn't offer an insurance plan is going to be a huge financial burden for me. I know there are others in my shoes from talking to some of the posters on SDN via PM.

It's true that KCUMB doesn't offer coverage, but coverage is required to attend.

CCOM's insurance plan sux..I got BCBS-Select Blue which has a cheaper premium and more benefits than CCOMs...

Touro NY actually recommended that I sign up for medicaid.

Yep, same here. That's the school plan, seriously

For the record, PCOM-PA will take medicaid, I already asked.

That said, I do like the blue cross plan so I might go with it, I haven't decided yet...

Really? Who exactly did you ask? Thanks.

TOURO NY told it to me during the interview, not sure who told me that

For PCOM I spoke to the monica something about having gov't insurance (tricare, medicaid, etc) and they said they only require an insurance plan, they don't specify which
