Hi! First time applicant here! I would really appreciate any help/advice :))

I am ORM (female asian), MN resident (born in Iowa, just graduated from U of MN (biochemistry and human physiology)

Cumulative GPA: 3.99 Science GPA: 3.99

MCAT: 516 (129/126(rip)/130/131)

Research: ~900 hours in cancer lab with no publications. 1 honors thesis

Clinical: 1,200 hrs ED scribing (+ will continue in gap year), 75 hrs in free medical clinic for underserved pop (+will continue), 120 hrs in children’s hospital

Physician Shadowing: none (how bad is this? considering covid and that I am a scribe) should i start looking for opportunities now?

Non-clinical volunteering: 100 hrs over 1.5 yrs Love your Melon campus crew (fundraisers raising $ for children’s hospital, held therapeutic events for pediatric cancer patients and their families), 30 hrs over 1 yr pinky swear foundation campus crew (similar to LYM)

Other Jobs: 75 hrs biochemistry TA

Other extracurriculars:
200 hrs event coordinator for womens fitness club on campus, 60 hrs health advocate for my freshman dorm, 30 hrs honors program mentor


LORs: my PI, biochem prof, ED doctor

School list: Scared that I have too many high tiers, should I add any low yields ? (Also don't want tons of mandatory research during med school)

You shouldn’t apply without dedicated shadowing. It seems that you dont have much nonclinical volunteering providing services to the unserved/underserved in your community. What you have is campus based and doesn’t seem to have given you up close contact with people unlike yourself. You need to get off campus and out of your comfort zone.Find a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen and volunteer. Maybe go visit at a VA home and spend time with the residents. Try volunteering at Habitat for Humanity. Almost anything would be okay as long as you are dealing with people unlike yourself. Because that’s what you will be doing as a doctor.

If you don't want mandatory research in med school strike Yale and Northwestern from the lists above. There might be others that require thesis-- check into MSAR.
