School List Help

I’d remove Colorado if you don’t have any strong ties. Are you low SES? If yes, Columbia could be a good choice (given that they tend to be generous with financial aid).

I come from a middle class family (poor upbringing though). Is it worth adding still considering my stats?

Absolutely. You’d probably still get decent finaid from them.
Also, in terms of “fit”, they care a lot about ECs (relative its peer schools) and I’d say that’s a huge strong point of your app. So they may smile upon you.

On that note, I don’t know if I’d necessarily recommend Tulane to you since your stats are high, and they’re “low yield”, but they also like to see ECs/leadership. So it could be a good fit, and they may smile upon you as well.

Also, I’m taking another look at your school list. If you REALLY want to cut down, I’d bet that you’re less likely to get interviews from Oregon and Ohio State as well. Even if they might be more OOS friendly than some, they still just might not believe you’ll go there over other schools. Indiana, I’m not sure about— I’d look into how OOS friendly they are. And if I recall correctly they’re a HUGE school. Is that something you’re interested in?

My honest opinion, given your stats and ECs. Besides your state school — if there are any “low” or “mid” tier schools on this list that you’re not actually excited to go to if you get in, I’d take those off.

Thank you for your in-depth response. I'll swap Oregon for Tulane! I hear that Indiana is more OOS friendly than most, so I tacked it on to add to my mid-tiers. So you don't think I'm being too top heavy, right?

Honestly, not from my perspective. I’d be curious what other people have to say, but here’s my two cents.

You’ve got excellent stats, and excellent research. You are competitive for the top schools. Many “lower” tier schools are going to think that you’re not going to go— probably with good reason. So unless you have a good tie to a particular low/mid tier school, they will probably yield-protect you. For that reason, even though a top heavy list might feel dangerous, it might also just be more realistic.

No one can guarantee anything in this process, but that’s my take!

Sounds reasonable. Thanks again!!
