Hello! I'm new to SDN and looking for some advice with refining my school list. I'm applying for the upcoming 2021-2022 cycle. I'm trying to apply super broadly since I know my GPA/MCAT isn't amazing. I will also be applying to DO schools as well but haven't made that list yet. Please let me know if there are any schools I should add or remove. TIA!

CA Resident/ORM Female
Ties to other states: Minnesota/Texas (have a family member doing residency at UTSW)

MCAT: 512 (128/127/128/129)

CGPA/sGPA: 3.56/3.45

ECs:

Clinical Volunteering
:
  • 200 hours volunteering with Geriatric Patients (3 years)
  • 40 hrs Hospice (1 year)
Non-Clinical Volunteering:
  • English Language Tutor for Immigrants: 70 hrs (Did about 40 hours pre-COVID, and taught remotely last semester for ~35 hrs, going start again next month)
  • Free Clinic: 60 hours volunteered with underserved populations to address unmet social health needs (stopped due to COVID-19)
Internship: Was an intern for non-profit in rural India and worked for their health and sanitation team to conduct activities for school children about hygiene and conducted menstrual hygiene surveys with the village women.

Research
  • Research Assistant at Traumatic Brain Injury lab just did data entry (30 hrs)
  • Paid Research Assistant at a Psychology Lab transcribed clinical interviews and coded affect analysis videos (150 hrs)
  • Research Assistant at a Surgical Education Lab (30 hrs-ongoing) mentioned as an author of an abstract the lab submitted
Leadership
  • President/Founder of a nonprofit that works with rural Indian villages to create tailored initiatives addressing their needs (3 years)
  • On the executive board for a collegiate dance competition that partners with a free clinic to donate its proceeds to
Shadowing
  • Done around 30 hrs abroad (Internal medicine, OBGYN, Pediatrics)
  • Going to be shadowing an OBGYN and Internal Medicine DO physician next month
  • E-shadowing (10 hrs-not really sure if that's going to be relevant for ADCOMS)

Wow, that's quite a list, though you listed a couple twice. For UCR, I would only apply if you have strong ties to the Inland Empire area in CA. Rush will expect far more service hours than you have so I would drop that one. Minnesota, SUNY DS, the two Arizona schools, and Stony Brook take few OOS applicants. Ohio State, Cincy, Einstein, and Pitt look to be maybe a bridge too far given GPA and MCAT. Cal Northstate is a for profit place and I would not apply there. The rest of the list seems reasonable (a couple of your CA schools are reaches but you really should apply since you are IS). You might add Wake Forest, Penn State, and Colorado. Others on here can give better advice. Good luck!

Forgot to mention that I have ties to Minnesota as well, but thank you for your insights will definitely take them into account!

The Arizona schools, Stony Brook, SUNY Downstate, Toledo, Geisinger, Central Michigan, Michigan State accept very few non residents with your stats and no connection to the state. Your stats are also not competitive for several other schools on your list. I suggest these schools on your list:
California Northstate University

Kaiser Permanente Pasadena

Keck School of Medicine

UCD

UCI

UCR (if you are from that region)

Quinnipiac University

George Washington University

Georgetown University School of Medicine

Stritch School of Medicine (Loyola)

You could add these schools:
TCU-UNT
Jefferson
