Hey everyone! I’m currently in the process of beginning to pre write secondaries but I haven’t fully finalized my school list. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I currently have 29 schools and want to narrow it down to around 25 or so. I looked through MSAR but I know that it doesn’t always give the full picture on whether someone would be a competitive applicant. Please let me know if there’s any I should definitely take off or any obvious matches that I missed that I should consider applying to.

ABOUT ME:

cGPA: 3.79
sGPA: 3.7
MCAT: 517 (130/126/130/131)
Syrian CA Resident
First-Generation US Citizen and First-Generation College Graduate
WARS Score: 84 (idk if that matters)

Application and PS has a MAJOR focus on education and serving those who may face communication barriers, fueled by my experiences translating for my immigrant family in the Doctor’s office while growing up. Also a *soft but pretty obvious focus on neuroscience/neurology

- ~350 hrs Clinical Volunteering as a volunteer Medical Assistant at a Neurology clinic where I had a lot of hands on interactions with patients such as physical exams.
- ~60 hrs shadowing a neurology private practice
- ~1300 hrs non-clinical volunteering across two involvements. One was as a scout leader working with and creating activities for middle eastern immigrant children. The other was volunteering at an after school educational program with homeless elementary school children on Skid Row
- ~500 hrs research in a neuroscience lab with 1 poster presentation, 0 pubs
- ~100 hrs paid clinical experience as a COVID tester in the middle of COVID at a free COVID clinic.
- ~500 hrs as a stem tutor
- ~3300 hrs paid employment in various jobs since I was 17 years old (I should’ve put all of my jobs under one activity but didn’t know i could do that so i had to leave off several hundred hours smh) most recent job is working as a teacher aide at an elementary school. Talked about how working with children has taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and clear communication
- ~Treasurer on the founding board of a Neuroscience Honor Society Chapter on my campus
- ~hobbies include gardening, collecting vinyl, and playing multiple instruments (used to be in a band with a local following)
- LORs: 2 STEM professors (still waiting on one to submit :/), 1 MD from the neurology clinic, 1 boss from tutoring center, 1 research PI

Submitted Primary: June 14th

SCHOOL LIST:
Green=Baseline
Yellow=Target
Orange=Reach
Red=Super Reach

Impressions: Your application seems focused on neurology and not any other aspect of medicine. You don't want to go into the communication disorder professions (which we also serve), such as audiology or speech-language pathology? We need people in those fields, too. Having lots of education also makes me wonder why not become a teacher where there is a dire need. Lots of service to children and not adults, seniors, or other marginalized populations it appears here.

Are you fluent in Spanish? Have you contacted officers of AMMSA (given your Syrian background)? Your list is mostly "coastal" with few midwest programs.
