Hey everyone! Long time lurker here! The info on here really helped me to prepare for DAT, so I thought maybe you guys could also help me with my school list. I am hoping to e-submit tomorrow after work.

Take off all of the Texas schools unless they're dream schools. Your stats are really competitive, but those schools are notoriously OOS-unfriendly.

Do you guys recommend I add in more safety schools? Thanks!

I would add in more schools. Also, Colorado looks OOS friendly, but it's mainly schools from the Western Alliance states. Double check where students are from there to see if it's worth applying. Harvard, I'm guessing with the 800 hours of research that you enjoy research. Your GPA is pretty low for Harvard, and with a class of only 35 students, chances there are pretty low. Apply if that is your dream school, but just be aware of that. After taking off the Texas schools and maybe CO, think about adding in Iowa and Ohio. Iowa gives OOS scholarships and Ohio gives instate after a year. I would also add in a couple private schools. I don't know that any school is really a safety school with your stats. I'd consider the AT STill schools, AZ and MO. They will love your volunteer hours.

I would take out Boston and Virginia. Add Pitt

Agree with @pulltheleverkronk, also everytime I read one of your posts I read it with Patrick Warburton's voice.

I would look into Utah if you're not completely opposed to that. I know this year they were looking into a lot of qualified out of state applicants. The in-state positions are really competitive but the out of state are less so. It's a really great school as well.

Well you're talking about a state that puts out the most dentists per capita and a school that only accepts about 20 in-state applicants. Many of us Utahans love to Utah and want to stay forever and ever and ever...🙂 All that I know is that finding out of state females was quite a challenge this last cycle.

That is GOOD to know!!! Utah is actually on my list because they give OOS after a year. One of my friends is an UG there and loves it!

You mean they give in-state after a year? I would call and check on that because I think I remember some of my classmates saying they don't.🙁 I remember she was bummed because she got into Utah and UW and found out that UW does now and Utah still doesn't. Something like that. haha.

Oops, yes in-state 😀. Ok, I know Utah, unless they changed their policy for this year for undergrad gives in-state after a year. You have to register to vote and change your driver's license to do that though. Now, I'm wondering if they have different rules for dental school..off to look it up.

http://admissions.utah.edu/apply/residency/faq.php ok, they have the one year rule, but if you live there for a year before dental school you can get residency from the start--cool.

I also found on their dental school flier that they "recommend" shadowing 4 different dentists.

Yeah, there are quite a few students in my class who did their undergrad here and are paying in-state, that much is true. But I think the rules might be different for dental school. I'm not positive, but you should check it out before you dump application fees into it. That being said, the price is pretty similar to other OOS schools with really low living expenses so it might still be worth it. And our school is awesome.🙂

Ha. 4 dentists.🙂 I've never heard that one. I wouldn't worry about that too much. haha.

The link I posted was from the U and I'm pretty certain it applies from what it says.

I've actually shadowed 4 dentists already so I'm good, technically 6 since I shadowed in a practice last year with 3 dentists and watched all of them--but I was planning on counting that as one dentist. I've shadowed my own dentist, and will do more over winter break. I shadowed an oral surgeon and will do a few more days with him over the coming school year and I just shadowed a female dentist who has invited me to come back any time. I'll probably do that 3 or 4 more times this month. I have over 100 hours already and plan to have about 200 by June 2016. I also have contacted an alum who is a friend of my coach and he said to come on over anytime so I'll go see what he is up to. He is and endo so that gives me a lot of balance 😀.

From the U's undergrad though, right?

Yeah! That looks great! I'm sure you'll be fine.

ok, now I'm not sure. You can for sure if you live there for a year before starting school, but I can't find any info about after a year of dental school. Either way, it's a pretty area if nothing else 😀.

It says this:
  • Nonresident students admitted to the School of Medicine or to the School of Dentistry are not eligible for residency reclassification once they begin their Medical/Dental School studies, and will pay tuition at the out-of-state tuition rate for the duration of their medical/dental school studies even during approved “Leaves of Absence.”
  • A student admitted to either the Medical or the Dental graduate program may qualify for residency under the general rule of the law (twelve continuous months of physical presence in Utah, financial independence, and the establishment of significant ties to prove resident student status), if the eligibility is granted prior to the first day of the student’s admit semester for either program.

Seriously! Our brand new school is nestled right in the mountains overlooking the valley too. haha. It's hard to study when the sun is setting, especially since you are a ten minute walk from hiking trails. haha. SLC is awesome too. Anyway, I'll ask on Monday and tell you because now it's bugging me too. haha. I'll PM you and if I don't, feel free to PM me to remind me.🙂
