I think it would be helpful if we could create a list of links to school match lists. I've started by adding a couple I know of:

How do you evaluate a match list? The ones I've looked at don't mean a heck of a lot to me.

I think people tend to look at whether the match list shows that grads from that school matched into programs that they would want to go into. Those can take a wide variety, but in general people look for the following to assess the general "competitiveness" of that school's graduates:

1) Number of people matching into the competitive life-style specialties (radiology, dermatology, ophthamology, etc). Very few slots in these fields, so just getting into one (if you want it) is tough.

2) Quality of programs matched into, more important for the other fields, such as surgery, internal medicine, peds, etc. If everyone in internal med is matching into well-known programs at major teaching hospitals (harvard/penn/ny/hopkins/yale/stanford-ucsf affiliated programs), then....

In the end, it's about what you want. Most of us don't know what we want to do, so you want to look for the options a school will provide you for residency. If you want to go into emergency medicine in California, then find schools that match people into those residencies.

Meybe this is a stupid question-but what does "transitional" mean on the match lists??

Does anyone have Duke's matchlist? Duke has some strange policy of not including the matchlist as part of your packet of information when you go to interview. Nonetheless, I'm sure it's outstanding.

Transitional years are alot like 3rd year med school, only you're an intern not a med student. You do a couple of months each in peds, surg, medicine, psych, OB/Gyn, neuro.
