I did pretty well on the Aug MCAT and had a question. I go to UC Irvine. I studied on my own with princeton books borrowed from other people. I could not afford the $1400 for taking a review class. Although my verbal score was poor(I feel now I could have done better in this section) I think I did very well on the other two sections. I enjoy teaching others and wanted to see if people have ever heard of FREE tutoring offered to those less fortunate(either financially or racially) on campuses? Does this even exist? I was thinking about starting this up. Thanks!

That would be a great plan... 👍

The only thing is, what's the best way to find those who REALLY need the tutoring? Ask the people that are interested to show me their financial aid summary? I know I could advertise on campus to get tutors to help me. I would not want to waste my time on people who could actually afford it.

My school offers a free course from TPR (I think, maybe it's Kaplan). I'm not sure what the requirements are... but yes it does happen.

So they offer a free tutoring course to those who cannot afford their classes? What school is this? Thanks for your response.

Goucher College has a free MCAT review session. It's pretty intensive and is mainly for the post-bach program, but they allow undergrads to take it as well. The TA will meet with you if you need more help (for free), but I'm not sure how long the sessions are and if they qualify as tutoring, or just questions outside of class.

I was planning to just start up a tutoring group of about 5 people at my school. All I do now is fulltime reseach on my campus and would like to help some people out.

Here's my plan: I am going to advertise on my campus of free mcat tutoring to individuals who have either already taken the mcat and need to take it over or who are NOT taking a review course because they cannot afford it. I'd only want to tutor 5-10 people. I figure my situation is going well, I might as well help those who are having problems with the PS and BS since that's my strengths.

I was considering doing the same thing starting of with either one-on-one or a small group of 5. too bad were not in the same city. I'm thinking to only offer my help to people taking the MCAT already and scoring below a certain number.

as far as how to find people I'm going to start with the clubs in my school.

Let me know how things go for you.

Anastasis...which college are u in?

Hmmm... let's not. I try not to put stuff that personal up on this board (if you want to know why search for the thread about stalking on pre-allo that was there a month ago). But I don't live in Tyler, sorry :-(

I think the basis for getting a place in the free course is need but I'm not sure about that. Financial need wasn't a big portion of the application.

I've done a lot of advertising on my campus because of my involvment in Fraternity(Sigma Alpha Epsilon). I'm just going to post up flyers in the Bio area on my campus and aim at those who have taken the exams already. I think it'd be too hard to look for those who financially cannot afford the class. I really wanted to get those that financially needed it and have people donate their old Princeton books so basically I'd be able to supply the books too. I have (2) sets of princeton review books. I know how competitive bio majors are and I'd want to help those that really need it instead of those lazy individuals who barely try and expect me to help them. I'm gonna start next Monday.

good for you Gonzo12164
what a noble cause!
best wishes to you.

Thats ok...I was thinking if your college was somewhere near Tyler, I could think about going there for the MCAT review...

hey

if you're in the L.A. area...DREW university has free mcat program/workshop that you apply for. it focuses ONLY on test taking skills with HY DOYLE. good program.

also, CAL STATE LA has mcat SUBJECT review through the HCOP office...

good way to study by yourself while not missing out on the classroom advantages

I've heard Hy Doyle is a great teacher. A few of my friends had a seminar with him. I heard him speak at a conference last weekend, and his strategies make sense.

I know that the CCE volunteer program offers free mini courses in southern California. My friend took one at Azuza at the hospital he was volunteering at. I'm pretty sure they have one in Irvine (Hoag?) too. The one in Azuza is taught by the guy who started BR and comes with free materials. UCI also has the applicant support group for free application assistance. UCI has everything for premeds from what I hear.

Good for you Gonzo, adding to that list. I wish UCLA had more things.

So I posted up some flyers on my campus but have not had any replies. I was thinking about advertising more. Maybe not that many people have started studying for the April exam. We'll see if I get responses in a couple months.

Necro bump.

Anyone ever heard of free mcat tutoring? I'd like to donate whatever services I can, but only to those who actually need it. Are there colleges out there that actually have free prep or free mcat tutoring?
