I know this is probably a thread that has been gone over before, but I tried to search with no luck...soooo...sorry.

I know my "top" choices that I am applying to. However, in trying to decide what other schools that I want to apply to, I think it would be interesting to see what their average GPA/MCAT scores are. I would at least like to be the average student at these other schools I apply to. Getting to the point: are there any websites you know of with this info complied. Also, what is a good number of schools to apply to?

Thanks.

Go to your local bookstore and check out one of the Med School guides....like Princeton Review. They have both MD schools and DO schools with their average GPAs and MCAT scores, as well as information on cost of the school, average age of matriculation, class size, etc.

A good number of schools to apply to? That depends on the person. I was very picky about where I was willing to move, so that narrowed the field for me. Plus, I only wanted to go to a DO school. Once you have more info, the choice of how many schools to apply to will become more obvious for your particular circumstances.

good luck

I am only applying to DO schools. I only have 4 on my list of "schools I really want to go to." However, I feel as if that number is small and I should apply to more. One of the 4 on my current list is the one in Texas, and although I will be moving there in a few months (probably) I will still be out of state. I don't want to sell myself short by not applying to enough schools. Any suggestions are welcome.

ummm if you can't direct link to it then you need to put the entire weblink up not the shortened one.

I don't know what year these data are from; I didn't pay attention to see if it was listed on the paper or not. It is interesting to note that many of the average GPAs are well over 3.40 though. That can be both good and bad 😱

there was a discussion about this exact chart on an older thread and I can't remember where it was. I think some people said it was like 2001 or 2002 data and someone else said it was older. I know I saw this data last august so it at least had to be 2002.

and its not written anywhere to verify either.

When choosing a DO school, the most important thing is to look at the pass rates. Based on my research these are the schools with the highest pass rates on boards:

Michigan Stage, PCOM, UHS-Missouri, Arizona, TUCOM(San Francisco)

Other schools had very good pass rates and they should also be considered.

The school that I may avoid is Des Moines University. That school has had many problems with their pass rate. Last year's low pass rate was not a fluke. In fact, it was the smartest class to ever come to Des Moines University. Any other class would of had an unspeakable pass rate. I question the effectiveness of the curriculum to prepare people for boards. One of the reasons the school pays for Board Review from Kaplan is because they realize their curriculum if not effective in preparing people for boards. Two girls in the top 50% of the class failed the boards twice and the school has not bothered to help these students out. The school has basically "hung these people out to dry". One of the administrators felt bad for these girls but said their is not much the school could do. If I were an applicant. don't know if I want to attend a school like this.

I compiled this data last year while I was applying and obtain the data either through the schools website or by speaking directly with the admissions counselors. It also has some comments on it that you can ignore. Most of the information should still be fresh. Click on the link below, scroll down to response #9 and you will find the attached file.
