Okay so I know MD schools have MSAR where you can look at their average stats (gpa, mcat, etc.) but what about DO schools? Is there something for DO schools just like the MSAR?

Also I know some schools say that they prefer to have a letter of recc from a DO but they will take one from a MD. If I only submit a letter of recc from an MD would I be at a disadvantage compared to someone who has a letter from a DO?

First page of the underdog thread has stats for every DO school. Yes, if you do not submit something schools "prefer, but do not require" you will be at a disadvantage.

I think the content of the letter is probably more important than whether it was written by a DO or MD. If you have worked with/shadowed an MD for an extended period of time he/she would probably write a better letter than a DO you shadowed for a day.

I ended up sending a strong MD letter and much weaker (I imagine) DO letter (I only shadowed him for a day) to most schools after freaking out, but it turns out I didn't need the DO letter after all- I was accepted at a school that I didn't send the letter to.

Some of the schools actually specifically request a DO letter. Id just go ahead and get one of those.

is that first number the sgpa or cgpa? It's kind of interesting to see some gpa still in the 25 range 😀 I like that

I'm noticing that some DO programs have reached a "plateau" in terms of their admission stats (ie. Western, CCOM, DMU, etc.). That makes sense because anything higher will fall within the standard deviation of MD stats. On the other hand, some other schools that have been known to accept lower stats applicants are progressively increasing their standards (ie. Touro-CA and LECOM), but soon they will hit the plateau as well.

I really don't think there is any plateauing going on. As time goes on, stats will increase. The reason why they are so high for MD schools is because when you look at individual schools, MD tend to have less seats and way more applicants than DO schools. Every cycle more people are learning of DO and applying to it which will raise the stats higher and higher.

They keep opening DO schools. Once that stops, stats will continue to rise.

I disagree. As of now, DO admission stats are tad under those of MD. DO schools can't raise their admission stats up to MD levels. The MD degree remains to be the primary target for most applicants, regardless of the increasing acceptance of the DO in the medical field.

Yes, there are people who turn down MD acceptance to go to DO schools, but those are the exceptions.

Stats can't keep increasing indefinitely. Otherwise, some of the old, more reputable MD programs would have 3.9/40 AVERAGE admission stats by now. For example, using the search function, I found that the average admission stats for DO schools in 1998 were 3.4.1/25.4. That's 14 years ago.

Or another scenario is that over time, when qualified applicants can't get into MD schools, they'll go to a DO school as a back-up. This in turn might lead to a closing of the gap that exists between the stats of MD and DO students. Will this happen anytime soon? Maybe and maybe not.

There's no reason why DO schools won't take someone with a high MCAT and GPA. It's just that those applicants are probably getting into MD schools. But as competition gets tougher and as more people find out about DO schools, their stats will continue to rise.

DO stats averages are bimodal, some schools honestly have stats between 23-25 and others go all the way to 27-28.

It's not a scenario, it's a reality. DO applications for the top tier schools are dominated by pre-MD students.
