Hello all,
I am currently working in a school district through the Teach for America program. Nothing is certain now, but I may need to resign from my position early this year pending some huge family issues.

What I want to know is if schools can rescind acceptance based on leaving Americorps, TFA, or a job earlier than the final ending date. I am really hoping I don't need to leave, but if I do, I want to get a feeling for the perspective of medical schools on this.

Is it a guaranteed rescinded acceptance, or case by case? Completing AmeriCorps was never legally declared as a pre-requisite or imperative condition for my acceptance the way that academic record and criminal background check are. Obviously I will need to email specific schools to find out more, but I am looking for first thoughts here. I apologize I can't go into the specific family issues publicly.

Thanks for any knowledge.

This is really a question that you need to directly ask the schools you are accepted to. It depends on the legitimacy of your reasons. I would assume that it will not change your acceptance status, but that is pure speculation on my part.

There's really no way to tell without contacting your school. Family issues (depending on what they are) seem legitimate to me, and you can possibly talk to the dean/director of admissions regarding your status. Good luck!

It depends if this is treated like other ECs on application. At the interview, I'm sure many people tell the interviewers they will continue volunteering after acceptance, but quit soon after. I think most ADCOMs quietly accept this as empty promise. If they required accepted students to fibish, you would hear of lots acceptances being taken away.

Just my 2 cents... Of course ask.

I think you should talk to the school in question.

Hopefully this isn't the dean: (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Hopefully the OP will be able to talk it out with the dean.

Why would they rescind the acceptance? After acceptance, schools don't follow up on work or ECs. You don't send anything into them. Why would they care?

You seem to know something I don't know, because you think the choices are "guaranteed rescind" or "case by case" which blows my mind.

That was nice putting that table upright. Now I can place my coffee there.

Or..or you could just not tell them. Don't listen to the other idiots telling you to talk to the dean about it. Wayy too much attention to bring to this. They didn't admit you solely for your Teach for America experience...its not like you're applying for a Teach for America position.

People on here don't realize that you have to do something really obvious to get an acceptance revoked. As in lie on your background check or fail to complete a class prereq before school starts.

You're making a bigger deal out of this than it is. Quit and I hope your family problems work out alright.

Bahahahahahahahahahaha...What?! You need to find your happy place and relax. DO NOT listen to the gang of super neurotic premeds. Do not contact schools about this, and please for the love of little baby Jebus do not contact any deans. It's not a big deal...at all.

There is a reason that AMCAS only lets you input activities that you're already doing and not events planned for the future.

Your commitment to Americorp or TFA is to them only, and they are the only ones you have to answer to if you quit. Whether you fulfill that after you've already been accepted is up to you. Medical schools accept you based on what you've already done, not your commitment to doing something. Just don't lie if asked.

👍

Not to mention that even if you put "future commitment" up on application, there can be many reasons why it didn't end up working out. Nothing that will hurt you most likely.

Thank you all. I am also confident that it won't be a big deal (except for the commitment made to AmeriCorps). Most likely, I will not have to face this decision, but I am glad to see the same conclusion that I reached. The "rescind" or "case by case" is simply my neurotic (not-pre-med anymore) mind speaking.

Still appreciate any opinions. Planning for worst case scenarios is never fun. Thanks.
