I have heard that some of the most selective schools communicate with each other about who they will accept, and how likely one is to attend a school. Therefore, if someone is going to be accepted at School X... and he will surely go to School X...the other school will probably waitlist him or reject him. Has anyone heard of this...or is it just a rummor?
Also, do you know what schools communicate with each other?

thanks

Yes schools definately talk, but it's not just the most selective schools...it's ALL schools.

Not to sound incredulous, but how do you know? Is this something an admissions director told you?

I don't think they talk. With the thousands of applications each school has and the different criteria they all have to evaluate those apps do you honestly think that schools will sit down and have a coffee hour with each other to discuss applicants? I doubt they even have time for phone calls to each other to discuss an applicant, let alone lots of applicants.

Like Sponch said...where are you getting your info from?

I am with UCLAMAN, I don't think they talk to each other either. The adcom members are way too busy to start calling other schools about applicants.

Actually I've heard it from several admissions directors.

My credibility has been good on this board for long before you've arrived. So take it or leave it.

hey guys im pretty new here but i felt the need to chime in on this one....

while i cant say that all schools communicate I know when i visited school X and talked to the director of admissions he gave me pointers about the interview that he knew I had at school Y the following week, he even knew the date of the interview. it was really an odd experience.

oh btw im using the school x and y cause if they know what schools im interviewing at, they probably check out this board every once in a while too.. or i could just be really paranoid..

Sometimes, it seems like people on this board are very skeptical... When I wrote that I knew someone on the dental admissions board, someone wrote back basically saying that I was lying... Why is it that people on here are so skeptical? What reason do we have to lie? Is it so unbelievable that people on this board have relatives and friends in various positions in life... doctors, faculty, etc.

Perhaps you should've asked dir at school X how he knew about your interview at school Y.

I heard the same thing from my premed advisor, who is on a first-name basis with most of the admissions directors in the Midwest. This does happen, and I've been told it's especially true for the Illinois schools. I think alot of it is a "do you know something that we don't" type of thing.

I read that thread--no one implied you were lying. People are so skeptical because a lot of what's posted up here is wrong. Check out a few of the "OFFICIAL" threads and see how many different decision dates people have "heard." Besides, I think a certain amount of skepticism is good, especially for a scientist. If someone told you that he heard eating jelly beans cured cancer, you'd be pretty skeptical, right? There's nothing wrong with wanting some verification, which is all UCLAMAN asked for. I happen to agree that it would be pretty odd for schools to systematically check on each of their 1000s of applicants and attempt to guess where each is "certain" to go, although two offices making the occasional connection would not surprise me.

it's good to be skeptical! it's not nice to accuse people of lying or anything, but i think we should always question.

as for whether or not schools talk... i dunno. they might. something fishy happened at one of my interviews with one of the other interviewees that led him to believe the school knew where else he was interviewing. i also wonder if the uc's talk as it seems like not too many people get multiple uc acceptances.

i hope they talk! i think people with multiple interviews are less likely to get shafted at the end of the process if they talk. ya know?

Hey UCLA 2000,

Would you say that Penn talks to other schools about applicants?
My Penn interview went well but Harvard and Yale sucked, are thoose going to hurt me?

Whats wrong with skepticism? Isn't that a good thing? I would rather have people question and seek verification than people just saying "amen, amen."

Sometimes the advice I give on the board is encountered by skepticism as well. I usually try to back it up by telling people to call the admissions office to verify.

Ithink thats how premeds are in general...if there is no concrete proof they will always question.

I ask people where they got information as well, but if someone tells me, I don't accuse them of lying...

It has been my esperience that schools definitely talk to one another. Last year, Mr. Larkin from USF told me that Dr. Hinkley from UMiami had informed him that they were going to accept me, so he asked me what school I preferred. At that time, I didn't even know that I was accepted by Miami. He was shocked because he told me that he had known this for a whole week already!😱 I was in shock. I then received an acceptance letter from Miami in the mail thirty minutes later.😀

If I had to guess, I would think that they do talk. In my interviews, I got the impression that the interviewers and the admissions people are in their business because they enjoy working with students and actually, believe it or not, want to help. I don't think any of them are in it to see a student not get accepted. If one of them knows that a student has an interview elsewherer and they happen to have a connection there, why not pick up the phone and see where that student stands? I don't think they do this for all applicants...because there would be too many...but when it gets down to the level of those on the brink of acceptance, they just might. It wouldn't surprise me if they did.

Whoa, whoa, whoa....where did I accuse anyone of lying? 🙄

I posted my thoughts on the matter and then merely asked where the OP was getting his/her info from. Am I not allowed to give my 2 pennies if they conflict with someone else's 2 pennies?

The only one who is using the term "lying" on this thread is you.

My thoughts exactly. To be incredulous does not necessarily mean the OP lied. It just means that I am unsure of his source. All I wanted to know was where he had heard that. Now that he's said that several admissions officers told him, I believe it. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't like 10th generation heresay.

Dear UCLAMAN,
I'm really sorry. I wasn't referring to you when I used that term. I was referring to the person who posted that I shouldn't ruin my credibility by claiming that I knew someone one of the people who supervised the dental boards....
