Hello!

I heard from a friend that some schools (like Umich) auto-invite you to interviews if your numbers are above a certain threshold.

I was wondering how common place this is across different schools? Perhaps this might be true with state schools that must interview a significant in-state portion of their applicants.

I think a lot of places do. I know plenty of people that got IIs because they had strong numbers but they would be subsequently wait listed because of other things (e.g., insufficient clinical experience, etc.).

I suspect (but cannot verify) that my state school does this. I know people who are applying with me this year who got early invites from our state programs last cycle only to be rejected/waitlisted post-interview, either due to below average interviews or low clinical as you said.

North Dakota has a point system based on stats and residency that gives out a portion of their interviews automatically

OP, didn't know that Michigan did that, hm.

Indiana University does this, I believe. 75 % of IS applicants get interviews.

Upon doing research on past threads, it also seems that Pitt does the same! I am not sure how common place this practice is. Besides SDN, being a 3.9+ 40+ applicant is very rare, so I am sure those schools interview a ton of applicants below that threshold.

I suspect that may be the case at Drexel. I received an II last cycle less than a day after submitting the secondary, and many others reported the same. Since they have a checkbox secondary with no essays if I remember correctly, that makes sense.

I thought UMich only does that for IS applicants with good scores? Surprised about Pitt giving auto-IIs as well.

Pritzker and Vandy likely gives auto-IIs or applicants with LizzyM > 76 (Vandy at least has an automatic secondary for 3.8/37 applicants)

And some state schools give auto-IIs for IS applicants with good stats. Not sure about any other place.

I could not comment on UMich autoinvites for IS vs. OOS, and I am also just as surprised about Pitt! Also, a lot of the info out there on auto-II's seemed to be word of mouth, rather than confirmation from a school's admission office.

No. Neither Pitt nor Vanderbilt do this, and I'm fairly certain Michigan doesn't either (though I'm not familiar with their instate process). I would doubt many (any?) schools truly send an II based on numbers alone without some additional screening. Secondaries are one thing but interviews are another. Perhaps @Goro or @gyngyn can comment on this.

I have heard of some schools in other categories (veterinary, dental, etc) auto-accepting people pre-interview. (In a "show up to the interview and display you aren't a sociopath, and you're in" sort of way). However, those who are auto-accepted aren't told so until after the interview.

Med schools tend to be more selective in my experience. They tend to want to see the applicant in person before offering anything.

But the idea of auto-II wouldn't surprise me.

This sounds like a case of seeing a pattern where one doesn't exist. Auto-II likely only occurs at low-population state schools that are mandated to interview all IS applicants.

Edit: Just want to point out that per UMichigan's tracker last year, there was someone with a 44 or 45 MCAT who didn't get an interview. Just sayin

When I was a pre-dent we were told if we made it to the interview we were basically in. It's still taking a while to sink in that a med school interview doesn't necessarily indicate a future acceptance.

It's basically a 50/50 shot, plus or minus a few points depending on how much of a reach the school was for you.

Hm, that's interesting with conflicting views.

Also @PatrickStarMDPHD you should change your profile title to "Who you callin' pinhead?". Consistency is important with Patrick Star!

I can confirm that Indiana does seem to invite all but the most marginal IS applicants. Friends with 24 and 25 MCAT scores received interviews last year, only to be waitlisted or rejected after the interview. They have a special invitation SMP program, so if I had to guess, they are looking for candidates with potential that can then be invited to that program.

Michigan used to have that policy as confirmed by the dean of admissions. But they don't do that anymore.

Also highly unlikely the policy survives for in state applicants. N = 1, my in state 38/4.0 did not win me an interview.
But it's ok, I still root for the Wolverines.

Again N = 1, my LizzyM = 78 did not grant me an auto interview at Pritzker.
Make that n=2

And n=3. 😉
