Schools that like Non-Trads?

Hi Everyone!

Deep into the application process as is everyone I'm sure, I had a general question. Does anyone know of any schools that tend to lean toward or shy away from non-traditional students? I'm assuming it doesn't matter if you can prove you are capable of performing well in veterinary school, but just throwing the question out there to see if anyone has heard anything!

If you are thinking of applying internationally, I heard that AVC has a pretty diverse class this year. Being Canadian, that's all I know about 😛

Minnesota is very non-trad friendly. Almost half of our class seems to have been out of school for a year or more, and quite a few of us are on our second careers (i.e., mid-20s or older)

Iowa State seemed pretty good, too.

There was a recent thread about Mizzou being a no-no for non trads who have not taken a recent full course load. I'm sure someone will direct you to it, since I can't for the life of me remember which thread it was.

Weird. We have lots of nontrads in our class here at Mizzou. At orientation it seemed like I met more non-trads than traditional students.

I don't think they've posted our class stats yet so not sure what the average age is in our class but I'd say we're about on par for any other vet school in nontrad:trad ratios. The majority consists of traditional kids of course but overrall I think we have quite a bit of diversity.

Penn has a tremendous amount of non-trads, and I was most impressed with Penn amongst the 3 schools I interviewed at for its diversity. Still, Tufts, UCDavis, and Colorado all seemed relatively non-trad friendly so there might not be much of a difference there.

UM2014- It's good to hear that Mizzou does look at non-trads seeing that I already sent in my GRE and transcripts lol.

StartingoverVet- I will certainly look into Penn. I have decided not to apply to Tufts and Colorado, but am on the fence about UCDavis. My GRE would make me semi-competitive there, but I just don't know if I have the time to add more supplemental apps to my list of things to do lol.

Parietal- That's good to hear about Minnesota. Do they still have a raptor program there for post-DVMs? I looked into it a few years back when I was considering going into exotics.

If I makes things easier, UCDavis does not have a required supplemental. There's an essay about going into some special fields, and another for if you are disadvantaged in any way (socially, racially, financially, that sort of thing). But neither are required. And there's no fee.

AVC is only in Canada, not really 'abroad'. It's pretty close to the US geographically (I think).

Lovinglife, if you are from california, i would definitely apply to uc davis because there is no supplemental, so there is no fee! it's worth a shot. i was a nontrad (majored in lit and psych) and i got in for this year. ucdavis is awesome btw and i'm loving it here =)

western is open to nontrads too. they like their class to be a good mix. there supplemental is long though compared to some others, but since they're private, they'll take anyone nationwide (and international i think).

Jesiah- I am not from California, born and raised in corn central a.k.a. south central Ohio 🙂

I didn't know UC Davis had no supplemental... that certainly makes applying a little easier... however I don't believe I have the GPA that they are looking for (3.3ish) I had a really bad year due to some personal losses. I've tried to correct it, but raising a GPA is an uphill battle. I might give it a whirl though! I have heard about UC Davis campus though and it sounds like my undergrad campus, which I LOVED.

I did look into Western, but honestly I don't think their learning format is right for me. No offense to the school by any means, just a personal preference for traditional teaching methods.

I believe that Illinois likes non-traditional students and diversity in students as a whole - as long as they are well qualified, of course 🙂

Yep, absolutely. Fourth years also can do elective rotations there and the director and executive director are always over at the college talking about interesting cases and wildlife medicine/ecosystem issues. They are both awesome. 🙂

We have lots of other zoo/wildlife/exotic electives if you are still interested. 😀

Anyone know anything about UPEI and non-traditional students?

In their info they say: "Normally, these [pre-requisite] courses
must be completed while the applicant is enrolled as a full-time
student carrying at least 3 courses per semester of at least 3
credit hours each, excluding labs."

So has anyone gotten in haven taken most of the classes working full time and not on a full course load?

My friend's mom graduated from AVC in 2007. She completed prereqs part-time while working full-time. It's definitely acceptable for non-trads.
