Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew what schools liked when you showed interest in the school, and how exactly to go about doing it? Calling the admissions office and asking for more information/requesting a tour? Does this really increase chances of getting in, or at least getting the interview?

I'm pretty sure all schools would like you to show some sort of interest in their program. Showing up to interview because the weather is nice will get you a swift kick in the nuts.

Consider what you want in a program first. Don't pick a school because you've heard they like when you hang around campus. Then hit up some websites of schools to see if you like what you see. If something really sparks your interest, then look further. Some schools get all excited when you want to come visit (Pacific, Western), some can be a little less welcoming. Just be sincere and professional when you contact admissions for anything.

Keep in mind, face time, being annoying, sucking up, etc. won't do anything for you. It's very unlikely that it will increase your chance of acceptance or interview (don't read too much into rumors about UNLV and UoP in the last couple of weeks on the forum). But if and when you interview or fill out some secondaries, your answer to, "Why do you want to come to our school?" might be a little more believable if you've spoken to someone, visited, etc.

Depending on your time frame and location, look into sim clinics and open houses at schools near you.

If your school/club/pre-health department brings professional programs on campus for pre-health fairs/recruitment stuff, hit up the dent schools who come. If you can't get to their campuses, at least some one-on-one with admissions/student services people can be good. And you can snag a few pens and other school fodder while you're at it.

its like the lotto commercial "because you never know!" I say go for it, chat em up and see what it can get you. if you have the time and spare cash to visit schools and network, it can only help or keep you neutral. it wont hurt you, and my philosophy has always been to go the extra step, because people that put in extra work always look favorable. I.e. when you interview at the school you can say, you visited them BEFORE you got the interview and that professor or doctor XYZ showed you around and you were really interested in program ABC and BCD. I come from a business background where that kind of stuff helps you land deals, because its often who you know and not what you know.

hope this helps.

I hope you realize about 4500 students are accepted each year. And I am willing to bet majority of them never visited the dental school until interview date.

Don't overwhelm yourself with such activities. Spend majority of your time and energy working on your stats (GPA and DAT), thats a more guaranteed method of showing your interest.

The people who spend time visiting schools do so because its sort of a "last resort" for them. They have low stats and think it could help if they show interest. Is this plan helpful? Who knows... Will they even remember you? again, who knows. These schools are receiving anywhere from 2000-4000 apps each year and I bet a good portion of those applicants visited the school to "show face" in an attempt to show interest.

When they're interested in you they all love when you show interest.

None like to be bugged just bc you want to get your name out there.
